In their possession were found a | harness saddle, a riding saddle, a quantity of wire netting, an incubator, a blacksmith's vyce, and tins of paint stolen from different places. The accused, before. Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., to-day) pleaded guilty lo charges of stealing the articles, and were sentenced'each to three months' hard labour on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. WELLINGTON, October 28. Mi- Justice Cooper has delivered jiitljjmant upon a preliminary question raised by the defendant in the" ca.-.e of Dr Win. Young v. the New Zealand Insurance Company. Tlw amplication before the court, was made by the plaintiff under "The Declaratory judgments Act, 1903," to determine the construction of certain conditions endorsed upon a policy issued to him by the defendant company. The defendant objected to the mode of bringing the application before ths court upon a summons under the Declaratory Judgments Act, and contended that the court had no jurisdiction to hear the summons. His Honor, after hearing argument upon the point, bald that the" court had jurisdiction, a.ud that the application >vas a proper one to bring under the Declaratory Judgments Act, He therefore overruled the objections raised- by the defendant, amd fixed the hearing of th<3 case (or the 30th inst. CHRISTCHUROH, October 28. For the Canterbury A. and P. Association's metropolitan show the entries received to date outnumber those of last year's show by about 100. Further entries will be taken at (he Rangiora show to-mOBOT. CHRISTCHTJRCH, October 29. About 5 p.m. to-day an elderly man named Hamilton Geary, residing at Heathcotc, attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with an ordinary pocket knife. He was taken to the hospital, but it is not thought that he is in immediate danger. Ho has been practically bedridden with rheumatism for some- time.
