EXPORT CHARGE ON TIMBER

A GREYMOUTK PROTEST. (Per U.n'lted I'kkss Associatiox.) W ISLINGTON, July 20. It has been reported from Grcymouth that the .Minister of Railways proposed to plate an export duty of 2d p'er lOOit on all timber dripped' over Greunonth wharf. .Mr William Morris (chairman of the West Coast Timber .Millers' Association) telegraphed a. protest, to the. Hon. A. P.. Guinness, who interviewed the Hon. J, A. Millar on the subject, pointing out that the freight by rail on timber was doable that charged for coal, and that the timber trade was the least able to bear any extra, burden at present. The Minister's reply was that increased revenue was absolutely necessary lo the tircymoutb Harbour Board, and that, with that object in view, he had submitted the proposal lo secure consideration and recommendation from that body. He would promise not to pass the Ortlcr-in-Coimcil fixing the charge until the new Harbour Boards bad been gazetted and had considered the matter, tic had found that all Harbour Boards under the Government's control, with the exception of Gvcymouth and Westport, levied the charge referred to.
