CONFLICT IN WELLINGTON. (Per Uxitf.ii Prkss Association.) WELLINGTON, July 19. A deputation waited on the' Acting Prima Minister to-day protesting againstthe issue of an Ortlei'-in-Oouncil in terms of legislation passed in 1907 authorising the Wellington Clas Company to construct mains through that portion of Wellington Borough known as Aleirose Ward. The deputation was headed by the Mav»r of Wellington (Dr A. Jv. N-ewman), and. besides the city councillors, included the Hon. T. YY. Jlislop and Mr G. W. Aitken (ex-Mayors of the city), and Air I). AI. .13. Fisher, A!.P. A strong protect was made and some very plain speakin" indulged in. The deputation declared that if the order is issued local government might as well end, and the Government would simply be placing itself in the position of taking sides with the company against the rights of the citizens. Eventually Mr Carroll promised to stay Ill's h.ind for "a reasonable time" if aii attempt was made to settle Iho matter by arbitration.
