A MAN SHOT DEAD. DEAF AND DUMB SON ARRESTED. I'ALMEKSTON N., July 5. A terrible tragedy occurred at h'oxt'jn about 1 o'clock this morning. A dual' and dumb boy, the son of Air Thomas Nye, aged about 19 years, shot his lather dead. The boy occupied an upstairs room, and waS coming downstairs. He met his father, who was aroused by the boy walking about in the dining-room, at the foot of the stairs, The boy had in his possession a gun belonging to his father, and he immediately tired, shooting Air Nye. through the neck. . .Mrs Nye was aroused, and called to her husband. Receiving no reply, she called to the two other children, who occupied the upstairs room, telling them to escape. She then rushed from the house for safety. The boy tried to intercept her, but she escaped. The boy then left the house. The police were communicated with, and traced tiiw on to llie road leading to Levin. It is rumoured that the hoy had threatened to kill Ids father, and on several j occasions had ran away, taking the gun | with him. j The youth, whose name is Hedley Nye, was apprehended at Levin Station tiiis morning by Constable Bngric, who is . stationed there. 'The constable wrote down on a piece of paper that Nyt was being arrested on a charge of murdering his father, and the youth pimply wrote • " Yes." According to the arresting constable the accused was very quiet, and does not at all seem to realise that he has committed a desperate deed. When Mrs Nyo discovered the ' deed tlidt had been committed /die at once lied from the house. 'The accused, it is ■ stated, pursued her across some paddocks, but Mrs Nye succeeded in making her escape to a neighbour's house. On learning of the occurrence the latter went back to the house and took- away two children and ■ left one girl of' 18, and then communicated with the police.
