LOYAL ORANGE CELEBRATION

Orangemen and their friends assembled in force at tho Art Gallery Hall on Wednesday evening to celebrato tlio 12th of July in accordance with annual custom. The. chair was occupied by tlio Rev. ■Jlr Bailey, who said he was extremely grateful for tlio honour conferred upon him by electing him to such an important post. After apologising for the unavoidable- absence of the Mayor, and others, the Chairman expressed great pleasure at seeing such a very largo audience assembled to celebrato the 12th of July. Orang«ism, ho was glad to eay, was not dead, nor was it dying. The various reports submitted showed that tlio order was steadily v progrossing in this Dominion, in Australia, and elsewhere, and tlio success already achieved was an inspiration to go forth and prosper. Ho was glad to see such a large proportion of wiing men and women present, as it was to the young people they must look for increased interest m tho order generally and if tlio order was to progress an fn'creaso of jouiig members was indispensable. On behalf of tho order the chairman extended a cortbal welcomo to those desirous of becoming members, and expressed a hope that he membership of the various lodge, would bo considerably augmented durln-v ho coining yo„r as there was a possf-' bility of tho order becoming oven mor« extensive ami more influential than at prcsonlv-fAppliuise). Tho remainder of the evening was devoted to harmony, quite an extensive nirl varied programmo being presented Tho I'ettit family orchestra contributed a couple of items—tho overture " Arena " iikl " Watch Parade " (march)-in" capital ityle. Solos were rendered by His, a Burns, Miss E. Harvey, and 'Mifs'pan-'-jter. Miss P. Frame, danced a seauntreus «nd in company with her sister gave a tloublo sword dance. Tho male euloisls ivero Mr S. F. Benton, Mr S. Owen and Mr J. Simpson. Jlr J. A. Wallace (violin solo), .Mr T. 11. Amos (flute solo), Mr 11. Grenfcll (euphonium solo). Messrs Falck, Wright, Jago, and Ibbotson (quartet); Messrs G. B. and G. Laidlaw (cornet duet); Mr G. Laidlaw (cornet polo); Mr- U. Ow«n (comic song); and Mill. Russell (comic recitation). The performers all acquitted themselves to the manifest enjoyment of the audience, which applauded liberally, recalls being Swjucnt. Mijs B. Hartley played the accompaniments with her accustomed skill, and Mr C. miinro officiated as piper. Bro. ,Tas. W. Patton. D.G.S., was musical director, and fulfilled his pleasant duties most efficiently.
