NATIONAL DEFENCE.

MEETING AT CTIRISTCHURCH. iPEIt Uxitkd Pnuss Association.) CHKISTCHURCH, July 13. A public meeting of business, men was held this afternoon to discuss that part of national defence which is of the most vital interest, to the Dominion's commerce—namely, the protection of the trade routes. The meeting was held, under the auspices of the Canterbury Branch of the Navy League, and Major Hobday of the branch) occupied the chair. There was an attendance of over 50 professional and commercial men. On the motion of the Hon. H. I'. Wigram the following resolution was carried unanimously:—"That if is the opinion of this meeting that (he overwhelming strength and efficiency ofanlmp:ral navy is of paramount importance, and vital to_ the existence of every part of the Empire; audi that the people of this Dominion should make every effort, and, if necessary, soma self-sacrifice, in order to retain command of the sea." The Hon. G. J. Smith then proposed that some improved system-of land defence is necessary in New Zealand in order to allow the navy to leave our shores. The motion was carried. It was decided to arrange for holding a mass meeting shortly.
