KTrom Our Ows Coreespoxdekt.) ' AUCKLAND, May 19. An exciting cliase after a thief occurred at- Avondalo yesterday afternoon. Late io the morning some Chinese gardeners ill that district found that their huts ■had been broken into and various articles stolen, la one instance a man was ,<m\ going out shortly after noon. Another Chinaman found the same intruder in liis hut and grappled with him, but after si struggle the man escaped. The Into and cry was given, and. headed by Constable M'lnnes, a large body of men were soon in pursuit. An exciting chase, which lasted over four hours, ensued!. Keeping veil in front, the man made across cuuulry towards l'oinf Chevalier, where he jumped into a boat and pulled up the river. His pursuers followed the trail, and he then rem along lite beach tlivouv'li the bush and back nil In the main road towards toun. where shortly after 5 o'clock Constable M'lnnes secured the man and the parlies returned to Avond'ile.
