The :iieuil?3r for Brown's Hiding (Cr Keemui) ini reduced a deputation consisting of Mi- O. K. Cross (lessee of the Lawrence Borough Endowment) Tuapeka. West), and his Worship the Mayor, and Crs M'fntosh, MTvinlay, and Arthur (Borough Iveservas. Committee) in connection wilh tie opening of road line thioutrh Mr Kcenan's property, giving outlet from Mr Cross's property to Tuapeka Mouth. Mr Cross said lie wy.s hssee of the lioroiigh endowment, Ttuipeka West, and he had already been blocked, from using the track leading through Mr Keenaii's property, which had 1.-een in use for Ihe past 25 or 30 yean-. The Mivveyed road line which also went through Mr Keenan'is land was unformed and was being cultivated by him, ami if he were not .allowed the use of tho track mentioned it meant a, detour of from 10 to 12 miles io get access to his property from Tuapeka Mouth.

The Mayor (Mr KoberUon) said that when Mr Cio.-ri leased the. endowmont, ho was given to undorstand that, he would have access to his property fiom Tuapeku Mouth by this track. Their object in coming before die council ihn.t day was to ascertain whether the right to ttte this track was to be continued; if not, to ask tho council to have the surveyed road formed for trafiic. They did not wish their tenant put to any inconvenience that could he avoid"''!.

Mr JM'lnlt'sli (cliairiiia.il of ihe Reserves Committee) produced a plan of the torough endowment and exphm.-ed the position to tlt3 council.

O Eeeii-i-n said the owner of the property through which the track and road line paswjd was his father, ami on his bfihalf was authorised to say he was prepared io give the land for a deviation on condition that, ho received in exchange the two portions of tho surveyed road whioh would be closed, liehig an interested party, he would take no further part in the proceedings, and would retire whilst tho council ditsviKSKl the matter. (Cr Keenan then retired).

Mr M'Kiulay said that an outlet to Tiiapeliu Mouth, cither by means of the track which had been so long in we or by the surveyed road, was a. very imiwriant matter so far as the borough endowment was concerned. Ho thought it would be unwise on the part of the county to close one road and open a new one t.iil they wiv perfectly sure of what they were doing. He understood their tenant

was wrw.'i.ly sitkfcd with tiro Ivauk. whifJi had for so many years past served ill! practical purposes. As far a.s lie understood, a. road through private property, which had been need for over 25 years, toiild not bo. closed in a summary maimer. The comity engineer having explained the position, ii w.is unanimously resolved that ilie cliiiiriiuii, cngineei, anil moinber for the dUirict, together with his Worship the Mayor ami -Mr M'lutosli. visit the locality with a view io eominij 10 an arrangement v/itli Mr D. Or Keena.ii. who had been called in, gave an assurance that Mr Cross would be permitted to i:~? ths track pondm;; arrangements with Mr Keenan, son. Or Hov.att said he had mH the UUrict Health Ofikv-r (l)r Oman) when he visited Tapamr, and that gentleman had suggested a iimnlo wiv to overcome the drainage niiisinw at licko.
