ROSS GOLDFIELDS COMPANY. (From Oun Owk Cormspondrnt.) GREYMOUTH. March 12. ( The directors of the Ross Goldfieds Coni|xiiiy (Limited) visited Ross yesterday lo insjicct the ]irogrcs-i of their works. Most- of the contracts in connection with this company are now in a very forward •'tate. A large part of the machinery lias been placed in position in the powerhouse of Kanieri Forks. This work has been carried out under the personal supervision of Mr elcli (of Messrs Mabin, Welch, and Co.). The line of race from the lake to the power-house, where the large dynamos will be placed, is also nearly finished. At Ross the company has erected a commodious workshop and odiccs. while builders aro erecting the station for the winding gear. The mine manager (Mr William Wylie) is busily engagixl making preparations for the erection of the iiopjiet heads. The timber used for t-his iioriiou of the works is very heavy, the four principal uprights being 54ft iu length; The pumping ami winding shaft has been finished to the adit level, while the transmission and telephone lines have been completed. The whole of this latter part of the work (the electr.'o lines) has been passed by the c< mpany's engineer (Mr 11. M. Smyth) and by Mr George M'Grcgor (acting on behalt of the Government). The only machinery now to arrive aro tho big pumps which are to do the unwatering of the deep levels. These are exported to arrive about the end of this month. Messw Mabin and Welch are hopeful of being able to take a trial run out of the machinery in about seven weeks' time, while pumping operations aro expected, to be commenced shortly afterwards. At. a. meeting of directors of the company, held this week, the accounts for the month, amounting to £3000, were passed for payment. The company's secretary announced that it would be unnecessary to make any wll on the shareholders this month. Tho pros|>cets, generally speaking, of the company seem to be of the brightest, and all connected with it aro very hopeful of highly satisfactory results when operations have started.
