SOUTHLAND NOTES

(From Our Own CowiKsroxDm.) INVKKCARGILL, March 5. Xews has been received of Mr H. W. Notris, the Invercargill violinist, who recently wont lo Jxindon to pursue his studies'. .Sir Alexander Mackenzie, after his tiist interview at the Royal Academy of Music with the young Invercargillite, predicted a great future for Mr Norris. Cable, intimation of success in the university degree examinations held in November list lias been received by three ex-pupils of the Southland Uirls' High School—Miss Rose Daplyu lias passed the limit section of her 8.A., and Miss Meek and Miss Nettie Smith have passed the lirst section of the fame degree. At the monthly meeting of the directors of tlie Southland A. and I'. Association tod.u preliminary arrangements were made for the next winter show, which will this year bo kept open for three daysJune 15, 16, and 17. The directors consider that the support accorded the show in the past fully justifies this extension by a day. The date of the annual ram fair was fixed for April 6. At »> congregational meeting at Knox Church last night the .Rev. Frank Dutilop, .M.A., l'h.l')., was presented by the congregation wftli a costly tea and coffee sorvice to murk his 'iiarria.ge, which took place recently. The new classification of teachers will make a considerable difference fo the salary bill of the Southland Education Hoard. Last, month there were appointed lj extra mistresses and eight pupil teachers, ami to Ibis next month will be addsd 16 probationer throughout the reboots of the district. From the Education JJoard's accounts presented to-day itappears that the increase in salaries caused by extra stalling and the higher pay attached to exigent positions is £300 a month, without allowing for the- probationers. It is thus apparent that a vcrv large sum of monjy wi.il have to be found by the Education Department to cope with liic increase throughout the Dominion caused by the new classification.
