ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 1, Percy Bennct, aged 17 years, who was swimming off Chelsea on Saturday, was seen by his companions to throw up his arms and sink. The dead body was subsequently recovered. Bennet was a strong swimmer, but is supposed to have been seized with cramp, WHANGAREI, March 1, ■, An old settler named C. K. Hayward, of Miumgakartunea, 14 miles from Whangarei, was found dead on the road to-day. Deceased, who was returning home in a sulky, evidently took suddenly ill. He removed the cushions of tho sulky seat, and made a last bed of them by the roadside. ELTHAM, March 1. John Jones, about 45 years old, a labourer employed at- Matapu, was returning home from Eltliam on Saturday night, when he was thrown from his horse and killed. CHRISTCHURCH, March 1. At the inquest on James Moran, who died from injuries received by a fall from the roof of a railway carriage on Saturday, the evidence showed that the carriage out of which deceased was ejected was locked by'a .passenger, with a pair of scissors. A verdict of death from injuries received by falling off a train was returned. NAPIER, March 1.

An elderly man stripped and entered the sea on tho Town Beach about 7 o'clock litis evening, and is believed to have been drowned. His clothing is marked with the name Spence. It is thought that the man was a resident of Hastings, but the body has not yet been recovered.
