In " Ballads of'lrish Chivalry" (Longmans, k), we get a collection of the date Jii' Dwyer Joyce's metrical sv'tliujis of many irish legfends and national traditions. 'i'iicy appeal to his countrynien and fulk-lorists, but although nil the author's tiuisliing touches liavo been incorporated, and his brother lias Irestowal a deal of rate tipbii them, I hey are interesting more for their spirit and intention than their lyrical poweus or execution.

That tin- booK presents a lifelike picture uf the lime all critics agree, lint there has been a keen difference its to the picture of the Maid drawn by M. France

The lat;sl additions to the Lotus Libiary (Greening and Co., Is Gd net) are the " Woman and the. Puppet," and (-titer short pieces by that feverish writer, l'k-rre Louys, translated by G. F. Monkshood : and Flaubert's " Salammbo," translated by J. W. Matthews. Cnucerning the edition of Flaubert's brilliant study of auti'iuily, iheie is nothing lo be

said save that, the translation seems smooth and adequate. As to M. Louys, his writings belong for the most part lo unredeemed debility a"-' degeneracy.

'flic love story of Robert (.'arr ami Lady Essex is told 'by Mr Philip (tibbs in a volume entitled " A King's Favourite," which Messrs Hutchinson are to publish. This is the story of Ihe cold-blooded murder of Sir Thomas Overbury and of the guilty love which dragged down one of the noblest names in England.

To "The Wisdom of the East" series (Murray) have been added two volumes. "The Bool; of Filial Duly' (Is net) and "Sadi's Scroll of Wisdom" (2s no'). The former is translated from the Chinese by Mr Ivan Chen, and is an admirable example of these useful little editions. The civilised world over, Chinese respect, for parents is famed; and we can gather from this compilation the beauty of this characteristic in ac'.ion. . In "Sadi's Scroll" the Persian text is printed, as well as the translation by Sir Arthur Woiiaslon, who contributes an introduction. The fact, that no Kuglish version of this book is obtainable is sutlirient. excuse for issuing this translation of a poem by one of the greatest of Persian poets.

Selections of short "Stories by Morinice" anil Nathaniel Hawthorne have been added to Messrs T. C. and ]■]. C. •Jock's capital series, " The World's Story Tellers." There is an introduction to each volume by Mr Arthur Bansnnie,\.tlie editor, a good portrait, and a useful summarised chronology of the author. Poth books should be bought (they only cost a shilling each), if only to contrast the ideals and methods of the American writer with his underlying piety and the French with his sophisticated materialism. Here and there are to be found signs of haste in tue translations of .AJorimee: but both books must from every po*it of view he described as very cheap. i The influence of Nietzsche on serious hnglish thought lias not been very great, ostensibly. Put his less obvious influence, his peaceful penetration ot' the temper of English speculation has probably been much deeper than Dr Mugge. in " Fried rich Nietzsche: His Life' and Work" (thiwin. 30s fid net), appears to think. This volume ought to make for a better and more critical understanding of a remarkable num. Jt includes a lile of the philosopher, a. summary of his philosophy, with analyses of his works, abibliography, and a 'critical estimate of Nietzsche's position and views. ].(, is written in rather a proiossorial manner, but is very suggestive and thorough, ami ought to become a useful authority on its subject.

Professor Pitulolf Kitchen, of Jena University, as already announced, has been awarded the Nobel prize for iite.ature. _ It happens that Messrs Williams anil Norgate are publishing in their Crown Theological Library a translation of his most recent work, "The Life of the Spirit. '"lllis book," Professor J.ucken says, "represents a particular view of philosophy and undertakes to show that it, must be conceived in this way if it is to he equal to the demands which are made upon it by the life of mankind, and particularly by the present situation."

"Songs from t-ho Garden of Kama" (Heinemaun, 12s 6d net) is a graceful selection from the poems of ' the late " Lanrenco Hope," that- pathetic figure whose untimely disappearance has robbed Aiiylo-Indian literature of one of its truest siugeis. The volume from which these lyrics arc taken, of course, is well known after so many editions (a- dozen, we believe), but this present choice rejoices ill an outward form which should recommend it- to a new circle uf readers, and this result Mrs Eardlcy Wilmot helps to promote by means of beautiful illustrations. These are a series of her photographs of Indian .scenery, chosen with tasteful and discerning eye to the mood and spirit, mid not merely the letter, of tlio text. We £&ol sure ihaL Mrs Xicolson, wore she still alive, would liavo welcomed this co-operation of a gifted amateur in the interpretation of her poems, mid the result, is a decidedly attractive book.
