He a'lso slated that he considered it was advisable that the practice of granting diplomas of membership to honorary members of the institute should b; reviewed. HKCiOR MEMORIAL The President was able lo inform members that something definite was at last being done lo recognise, the value of the scientific work done bv Hie laio Sir .lames Hector. Mr Thomson said that- the Memorial Committee, of the institute had been reconstructed, and was in correspondence with tho other bodies which were acting in the iuleiesis of the movement. Tiic amount collected by the committee so far \v;',s. unfortunately, too small for the end in view. The main Hector Memorial CoininiLteo ; at the in- ' stance of the standing committee of the Jioarl of Governors, had, therefore, suggested to the Memorial Committee of the institute and to the allied committees in Auckland, Wellington, Chrisichurcli, nr.d Dimedin, that a joint circular should be issued, .signed by representatives of all the committees, appealing for lurther subscriptions to the fund. This suggestion hud been adopted, and the wording of the circular was now under coiu-idcralion. A vigorous effort would tie made by all the committees lo raise a sum of money sutlicicni for the establishment of a worthy memorial.
