FIRE AT SOCKBURN.

(Per United Press Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, November 26. A large, old, wooden building at Sockburn, used! as a soap factory by Mr W. H. Downer, was totally destroyed by fire during the early bonis'of yesterday morning. The buifdinti contained 40" barrels o( tallow (31 barrels of which were saved), «' quantity of soap and resin, also machinery and plant, the whole, with the buildings','being valued at £1000. The conflagration is supposed to have originated in the vicinity of ,the boiler, tbe fire of. which was left banned np as usual for the night at 10.30 o'clock the previous evening. Wlion the outbreak was discovered by Mrs Downer the portion of the building near the boiler was all ablaze, and the firm hold which the fire had obtained made it an impossibility to suppress the flames, The building and stock were insured for £650 in the Liverpool and London andj Globe office.
