OTAGO SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS

The monthly meeting of the Otago School Commissioners was held yesterday, when there were present—Messrs Wm. Dallas (chairman), D. Borrie, Thos. M'Gibbon, and 15. H. Wilmot. Tho clerk to the Soutlhand County, Council wrotd asking the commissioners to provido a road giving access to Block IV, section 10, Wyndham—To be inf6rnicd that tho commissioners are prepared to allow the council to take and construct a road through any of the sections in the block. The ranger reported on the result of a meeting of tenants at Wendon on the 2ird ult. in reference lo protective works on the Waikaia River—Solicitor to be asked to advise if it is possible to extend the leases in question, ami 'also to advise generally on the effects of the Public Bodies Leasing Act, 1908, in the event of the commissioners deciding to come under such act. Joseph Cooper wrote objecting to the Southland County Council taking land on the corner of Section 2, Block 11, Wendon, between his house and the river, and asking that the road be taken rivor bank, one chain wide.—Mr Cooper to be informed that the commissioners could not see their way to sustain his objection. ■ Donald Fraser, purchaser of section 10, block XVI, town of Lumsden, from the Land Department, wrote asking for a rebate of part of purchase money on account of land being partially flooded.—Received. T. Bryant, lessee of section 25, block V, Maungatua district, applied for rebate of rent owing to flood.—Received. .lulia G. Thompson, leasee of section 14, block VII, Winton Hundred, applied for 1000 4in drain tiles.—lt was agreed to pay two-thirds of the cost of pines. Messrs Kain Brothers, lessees of run 327 a, i wrote applying for authority to erect buildings estimated to cost £70 lo £85.—Authority granted. . John King, lessee of sections 21 and 22, Waiau, wrote stating that he had substituted 9in for 12in drain pipes, -and asking for the approval of the commissioners.—Agreed to. W. M. M'Kenzie, late lessee of section 4, blook XII, Oamaru Town, wrote asking for payment of £2 on account of fencing.—New valuation to be made prior to next sale, and amount charged to incoming tenant. Jos. Davidson, lessee of sections 53 and 54, block I, and 19, v block IX, Waikaia, wrpte stating that tho Railway Department had taken-'part of his land by back his fence, and that he was, therefore, entitled to reduction of rent over the same.— Rent to be reduced on account of area taken when said area is ascertained. The District Engineer for Railways, Inveroargill, wrote stating that the department had a title to' part of section 18, block IV, Otautau, it- having been taken by proclamation on July 14, 1878, and asking tho commissioners to quote a price for 'the isolated portions of tho section.—Commissioners prepared 1 to accept £5 for the portions severed. ■"" Tho district road engineer, Dunedin, forwarded plan of. proposed road exchange, block VIII, 'Waikaia, for commissioners' approval.—To be signed if tenant had bcon arranged with. The district road engineer, Invercargill, wrote stating that the department required material from section 1, block VII, Toi Tois, for road formation, and asking upon what terms same could be obtained.—Provided department arranged with the tenant for surface drainage, commissioners would not object to graycl being taken. Michael Garven wrote stating that he had purchased Mr Jas. Irving's interest in lease of section 7, block TV, Mabel Hundred, but that as the lease would expire on April 30 next, it was not worth while to have a transfer deed, executed; ako asking if he could obtain a' 14 or 21 years' lease without the property being submitted to auction.--Applicant, to be informed that the commisioners had no power to grant a lease except by pul'.lio competition. M. Tweedie, late lessee of • section 16, block VI. Rivcrton, wrote stating that he had purchased the freehold of same, and asking for a refund of amount paid for valuation on the improvements.—Amounts ■to'be refunded. . M. Jukes applied for a refund of £2 14s ■paid by him: for fencing on sections 18 and 19, block 'VT, AVaimatuku, which he purchased on"the 24th tilt—Amount to lie refunded. A transfer of the lease of section 57, block VI, Moorciki from J. Wright to David Hall, was agreed to on the usual conditions. ' • The assignment of the lease of sections 54 and 57, block IV, Otepopo, from Charles A. Rutherford to J. Minnear, was agreed to on the usual conditions. The transfer of the lease of section 2, block LXXS, Oamaru town, from E. J. Casaels to \V. H. Kcar, was agreed to on the usual conditions. James Auld, lessee of section 9, block XXV, I Havelock, wrote notifying that he had transferred his interest ,in the- lease of the section to Robert M'Caw.— Agreed to on the usual conditions. Jane Winsloy wrote stating that she had purchased the tease of section +, block LXXIV, town of Oamaru, from her mother, Mrs Dunbar, formerly Jane Morrison, and asking for the commissioners' consent.— Agreed to on the usual conditions. The transfer of lease of section 38, block IV, Mokoreta district, from Amelia Liggett to James' B. Taylor, for commissioners' consent, was agreed to on the usual conditions. It was decided that the next meeting be held on the 29th prox. . , Accounts amounting to £39 17s 3d were passed for payment.
