CRICKET.

CANTERBURY COLLEGE v. OTACO UNIVERSITY. Annual contests for cricket supremacy between Canterbury College and Otago Univetsily were inaugurated yesterday, when tho first match was played on Carisbrook Ground, Both seals of learning were represented by prominent players. The weather was ideal, and'tho wicket, prepared by (!roundsman Watson rolled out beautifully. The outfield was fast and as true as a billiard' table, but despite the'exceptionally favourable conditions prevailing the cricket was quiet, lind at times colourless and uninteresting. Otago, winning the toss and batting on such a perfect wicket, could only put. together 147; but Canterbury fared still worse, the whole side being dismissed for 100. At. no stago was there any excitement or thrill in tho game, yet withal it was a decidedly pleasant contest. With hut few exceptions the batting did not rise abovo mediocrity,, whilo the "bowling was always playable. The fielding generally was good . and the throwing-in fair, but more judgment might have- ken used in returning to the wickets.. The first three batsmen on the Otago side-S, Foster, M, Ongley, and M. Rutherford-made a reasonably good start for those lo follow, but the advantage was not availed of to any run-getting extent. Tho featuro of I.lm Otago innings (if it had any feature at all) was tho hatting 0 f M. Ongley, who gave an exhibition of aggressive fwrmg freciy, principally with ' tho off drive. His strokes wero well limed and marked by good driving power. Included lnlns score was ono/hit for 6 over the railii'at the pavilion o nd. 8. Foster balled well for 29, but ho scored much more slowly than his partner. The fowling 0 f Canterbury College was not calculated to inspire terror, yet several of tho Otago players treated' it with great respect. Donnelly (who secured five wickets for 63 aims) and Reid (four for 29) divided the honours. Going 111 to bat, the visitors created a favourable impression, but the Otago bowling, assisted by Fate, was too strong, and Canterbury went under for 100' runs. Arnold, who was unfortunafclv run o ut, showed good form, scoring well all round ihe wicket, Mnlgan, too, exhibited some knowledge of therequirements of the game, and he helped his side's score along with. a useful 21; while Tracy during the time ho was at tho crease proved to be an aggressive bat, with wonderful power behind .his strokes. Rutherford and TViddowson carried off the bowling honom-s for Otago—tho former with three for 49 and the latter, with three for 25,-while' Reid secured two for 1. The umpires (Messrs icste.r. and Philp) found their duties extremely hgJit and agreeable.
