PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON

(From Our Own Correspondent,) LONDON, October 16. Quite up to the eve of her departure today for New Zealand Miss Rosemary Roes (Gishornc) has continued her professional work. She returned from Ireland this week in time to join the outgoing steamer of the Orient Company, the s.s. Oruba. Miss Rccs has been on lour with Mrs Brown-Potter in that delightfully wit'ly and clever play, "Lady Frederick," by W. Somerset Maugham, whose " Mrs Dot,'' "Jack Straw," and "Lady Frederick" aro still "going strong" at three of tho London theatres. Mis? Rees leaves two of her own plays on lour in England, and she hopes to return to'the Mother Country in about a year or ill months after playing in Australia.

Mr J. P. Gabbatt, M.A., M.Sc., the newly-appointed protestor of mathematics at Canterbury College, hopes to leave England by the s.b. lonic, sailing from London on December 10.

A lew days ago the news of the death of Miss Susan Alice Lulrecki reached London. The deceased lady, who was the younge»|._ daughter of the late Mr Alois Konstantin l.ubecki, formerly of Dunoditi. New Zealand, passed away -at York road', Hove, Brighton, on the 9th hist., after an illness of some months duration. Latterly Mis? l.ubecki had resided in Xclsou and Auckland, so that she .had friends all over' the Dominion who will learn with regret of her death. Miss Lubecki was on a visit to the Mother Country,

Mr H. St. A. Murray (Christehurch) is returning to New Zealand via. Australia, by the e.e. Of late the New Z'ealand representative at tho Olympic Games has been touring in Scotland and in various parts of England on a round of visits to friends.

A large number of well-known New Zealanders are returning to., the Dominion by the e.s. Arawa, which left London yesterday outward bound, via the usual ports. Tho- passengers include: Tho Venerable Archdeacon Calder (Auckland), Mr and Mrs C. Plimmer ami the Misses Plimmcr, Mrs W. H. Reynolds (Dunedin)' and the Misses Reynolds, Mr and Mrs Alan Strang and Miss Strang (who .have been on a lengthy visit to the Mother Country), Mr W. T. Bidwoll, Mrs H. E. Moorohou6c, Mr and Mrs F. At least twice this year Miss Constance A. Barnieoat has been touring in littleknown parts of Europe: it is not long sinco sho came back from Swedish Lapland. This week sho is in London once more at the conclusion of a five weeks' trip to the Pieoa do Europa, • Asturia's, Northern Spain—a diutrict rather difficult to reach, and one which necessitates continuous travel of three days and two nights from London—one, moreover, to which very few people have ever been. On. arrival at her destination Miss Barnieoat was invited hv the Marques do Villavieiosa de 'Asturias, deputy for, Astirrias, and one of the oldest families in' Spain, to accompany; a shooting party composed of .himself, 'his cousin, . and two Spanish.friends (one of whom was just back fioin hunting _in Uganda). At the conclusion of this shooting expedition, Miss Barniecat set out mountaineering on her own account, always with an attendant guide, in tho mountains, it was mot possible for her to do anything without attracting attention, and having inmumerable questions to answer. Food • was often bard to get, and oftftn uneatable when it was obtained. Miss Barnieoat came across somo English mine-owners in I'he mountain districts, froth all of whom she received much kindness and help. She returns to .London in tho pink of condition, feeling very "fit"—and looking it, tco. Rear-admiral F. G. D. Sturdee, on Monday, .rclinqushcd tho command of the battleship Now Zealand, of the Channel Fleet, and was succeeded by (Wain A. P. Stoddart, of the battleship v C;esar, of 'the Devonport dividon of the Homo Fleet. Captain R. H. Anstruther assumed command of tho Csesar. Miss_ Margaret' Sale, of Girton College, Cambridge, has passed in theory, history, and practice of education. Mr Gilbert Anderson, who was New Zealand's official representative at the Refrigeration Conference, left Paws on Monday for a threo weeks' tour in Switzerland and Italy, accompanied, by Mrs Anderson and their duaghter. , ; -, This week the callers at the London office of the New Zealand Government have included:—Mr C. Haybittlo. president of the Northern Bowling Association of New Zealand, who i 6 at present in this country, is to undergo a serious operation. The lady who. entered the House of Com. moils on Tuesday evening and demanded in a loud voice that that august body • should cease discussing tho Children Bill and deal with the women was Mrs Travcrs'-Symons. It is stated that she resigned from the league some time ago, and her demonstration therefore was quite unofficial. Mrs Travers-Symons is said to bo tho wife of a New Zealand sheep-farmer.
