In Progress for November the most interesting article is one looking into the iutuie of airships, ill which the editor throws cold water, on t'he flnfcipatipns of tho writers of the "Wells- school, who give the airship of the. near future the command of everything both war and.commerce. Progress points out the obvious limitations, and considers that the Vrophets'of great things have no hope .except in the possibility ot inventions quita different from present developments. In other departments the scientific New Zea-' lander is up to its 'usual Rdvauced standard. The Christinas number of. the -Graphic continues to uphold.its high reputation for art (humorous and otherwise), good reading fine colour work, and general excellence; and this year's number—illustrated as usual in,colours throughout—is, if possible, even better than its predecessors. Bound in an aristic cover, on which is an admirable picture by Frank Greig i" God ltest Xou Merry, Gentlemen"), containing the very embodiment of the true ■ Christmas spirit, the number is full of good things from-start to'.finish; and with it aio 'given away two beautiful ooloured platesone of them a charming child study by Helen Hindley entitled " Lazy-bones," and the other . representing one of life's little tragedies, "The East Match/' by "William Small. A capital collection of. short stories is furnished "by favourite writers, illustrated by well-known artists. Old-time Christmas subjects are delightfully treated.', In pages of fun andfrolic the number is exceptionally strong. Tho advantages ot the Rodier method of rabbit extermination are set forward' in a pamphlet which has reached us. The writer scouts all the methods hitherto tried, including the l)anys7. cultures, and maintains that the only effectual plan is to bring about a preponderance of males. The latest thing in cryptology is a postcard code, by which a private correspondence can be kept up by using arbitrary numbers contained in the code. It is compiled by Captain D. H. Bernard, and is especially recommended to those who desire ,to interchange tender messages without the nrtrasioii' of unfriendly or inquisitve eyes.
