OTAGO ART SOCIETY.
ANNUAL .EXHIBITION. The Otago-Art Society opened its thirtysecond annual exhibition last night. Tiie attendance, was"so' good that the council ot the society is quite warranted in congratulating itself oii siioh an evident mark of the increased appreciation of art in JJunedlll. This gratifying evidence was further emphasised by tho sale of half a dozen of the pictures a very short time after the-gallery was thrown open to tho public. Iho formal part of the opening was performed- ,by Mr George Joachim (the president), who said:—ln opening our exhibition this -year we miss the familiar face of our -hon.- secretary (Dr Scott), who has always ■ taken- so much interest in annual shorn, He-has gone for a trip to England, and'we all wish he may enjoy Ilia Well'earned--holiday. lfis place with this society has-been'admirably filled by our hon'. treasurer (Mr M'lndoti), who has kindly taken up the work, awl I feel that we may have reason to be grateful to nim. Our thanks are also duo to the Hanging Committee, which has eo well accomplished its difficult task. In loking at the. work on our walls I am sure you will agree with me that we have every reason to bo satisfied not only with the millibar of pictures, which exceeds that of last, year, but also with tho quality of most of tho work as compared with last year's exhibition. We have again to thank thoso friends who have lent ua pictures, which arc a very great attraction to the exhibition. A new feature thig year' is the Photographic Society's exhibit, which, comprises many beautiful works. It seems to me that the improvement since the society last exhibited in our gallery is marvellous. The council was much gratified to receive so many competitions for the prizes offered, and it considered it was justified in giving two prizes for tho head 6tudies--onc for oil and one for wnter-colour. .The competition pictures are all hung on tho platform for purpose of comparison.
