Plumbers' Kxanunatioii board it was considered that tho standard in Dune, din was 5 not equal to that, sot by the Melbourne • Hoard, and that, consequently the request of the Dunedin Plumbers' Union that the certificate issued by the Dliuedin lioaul might be accepted and licenses issued without. further examination by the Metropolitan lio'ard of Works could not bo acceded to.—The letter was referred to tlio Wtrrkb Committee. . The Town Clerk, Eoslyn, ivroto calling attention to the. very unsatisfactory state in which the streets of the ■borough had bsen left where tho board's contractor had recently laid sewers. His council had also instructed him to request that the Drainage Board would at once take steps to restore the surface of these streets to a proper condition.—A report on this matter by Mr A. Slinger (drainage engineer) was then read as follows:—"I have the honour to report that I inspected this lino of kern-lies, and find that- the restoration of the surface is as good as can be expected for a newly-tilled trench. The maintenance does not expire for about fivo months, and by that lime a considerable settlement will have taken place, iSnd tho deficiency filled with metal. As t.horo is no ballast on these roads, and the crust of tho metal is very thin, it can only he expected that, such roads will bo ill a bad condition during wet weather, and what has made the surfaeo much worse for i raffle is the line of trench for the water reticulation, which was cut up during tlio winter. Tlio asphalting in the footpath in llos? street will be com- _ menccd as 59011 as the trench filling has settled."—lt was d<?cidcd that a oopy of th-o engineer's report be seat to tho town 1 clerk of Roslyn. The present rising main had been proved to bo a partial failure. Mr Cardcw, when, here, recommended that it should bo discarded and a cast iron' rising main substituted. Tenders were called, but thc^ cost was rather high. On the advice.of their engineer the board agreed to carry.on for two period which had passed. Ho considered that the limit of safety had been reached, if not passed, and the committee brought, the matter before tho board in the form oi' this recommondation. They ill-afford the expenditure, but he took it that property and life were tho first considerations. The present board was' not responsible. It was a legacy left to thorn. As tenders were to be called for tho work, he did not think it advisable to say what the cost, was likely to be, but ho might mention that tho rising mains they were sacrificing cost about £6000.
