KING HAAKON'S BIRTHDAY.
i * NORWEGIAN APPRECIATION. (Pee U.vitkd Press Association.) ': AUCKLAND, August 5. Tho birthday of King Haakon of Norway, which fell to-day, was made the occasion of a display of international courtesies by the Consular representatives of tho powers stationed in Auckland, and during the day the various Consuls called upon Mr Roland St. Clair, Norway's representative in Auckland, in accordance with diplomatic custom. Mr St. Clair has only recently returned from a visit to Norway, and states that from the King downwards the very greatest interest is taken in Norwegians in the progress of New Zealand. ." The people here," said Mr St. Cla-ir, "would be surprised to find how thoroughly everything in connection with New Zealand is understood in Norway. I have just received a letter from the 6on of Norway's Prime Minister (Gunner Knudsen), in which he says: 'My father lias made a hobby of studying New Zealand ,affairs, and he declares that when bo is tired of Norway he will go to New Zealand and live, as he thinks -that outside of his • own country New Zealand is tho best place in the world.'"
