T) 10 ordinary monthly meeting of the U aikouaiti (,'ounty Council, iiclcl yesterday, was attended by C'rs A. S. Orbcll (chairman), ,J. Foots, C. Duke, J. M'Gill, A. Kilpatrick, and G. li. Charlton. HEI'OBK. Mr W Kendall, County Inspector, reported us follows;— liawksbury Ridiuy. —Several email slips and washouts had taken place during tne veoc-nt floods. The Stoney Peak and Trotter s Creole loads were slightly rutted, and the gravel batl been washed off tho approaches to Mount Royal bridge The slip Oil tlie Quarry road had slightly subsided, l)ut. had been attended to. The washout at t.he Bullington Ford bad been filled in, also the slip on the Station road. A considerable washout had taken plate at tho ford at M'Grath's road. Owing to the height of the river t.he footbridges bad not yet been put up. Flag Swamp Creek fords liad been made passable, but sevetal loads of gravel required removing. I'K'eskin Riding.—Four large slips ttad completely blocked the Waitati-Wakari road, which would probably be repaired by Tuesday, July 28. Mitchell's and Downs Fords had been repaired, also the footbridge at the latter. The Long Beach road had bc-en washed bare and needed blinding. Several small slips had occurred on tho Lower Harbour road, only one of which (near Mr Mason's) interfered with traific. North-East. Valley Biding.—Several small slips and depressions had occurred on the Pigeon Flat and Waitati-Wakari roads. A slip had been adjusted on'the Main rood,' Mt, CargiJl. Three loads of planking for bridges on the Waitati-Wakari roads had conio to band. Owing to the recent floods conlw'. work in the county had been practically at a standstill during the month. —Adopted and approved. Inspector to be instructed to effect repairs as soon as possible.—lt was decided, on the motion of Cr Charlton, that in regard to the Warrington district roads a grant of £200 bo asked for, as they urgently require attention. CORHr.SrONDF.NCE, Mr Thomas Mackenzie, M.P., wrote stating that he would bo pleased to give his best attention to the road requirements of the district. —Received. Ml" D. M'Rao wroto drawing attention to damage to roads in the Ment.horn district.—Received, Matter to bo attended to. ,Mr W. Hefferman wroto drawing attention to damage done to his road by flood. —Received. Inspector to get necessary work done as soon as possible. Mr A. Campbell wrote requesting permission to enclose a small plot of land.— Granted during pleasure of the council. Work to be done to the approval of inspector. Messrs Cooper Bros, and others wrote requesting tho council to metal the road.— Inspector to report at next meeting of the council. ; .The.Town Clerk, Port Chalmers, wroto that his council was inclined, to join With that of Wtiikottaiti in an action against Messrs Scott, in connection with damago to roads by cartago to the now docks, but before finally agreeing to same (■he council had written for a definite reply as to the contractor's intentions. —Tho Chairman said au attempt had been made to como to terms. Mossi-s Scott had offered to break or .quarry, some 200 yards of rook, in the future. Thinking the" matter over, he thought it would be a good thing if this council and tlie Port Chalmers Borough • Council united to fight this contractor. Mr Hosking, K.C., httd given his opinion that a large amount, might be saved by the'eamo evidence being given in both cases. The work must first be done, and then made for the cost. Mr Ifosking was of opinion that they might do o' i road first and sue on that, and notice lie given to Mr Scott that it would be as well for hint to inspect the road before thoy put. metal on it. Bot.h bodies should eall for separate contracts.—Cr Kilpawick suggested that photographs of tho roads, when the contractors hod finished, would bo capital evidence.—lt was then decided that up to the time the case came into court the expenses should bo charged to the general fund. After that a decision to be come to as to ;whether the Blueshin Riding should War the charges.—lt was moved by Or Foote, seconded by Cr Ivilpatrick, and carried: "That the letter from the Borough Council of Port Chalmers re damage done to roads within their borough by tho extraordinary cartage of metal, etc., to tlie new dock, bo received, and that should the borough dccide to take legal proceedings against the contractor to recover cost., of necessary repairs to the roads in question, this oouncil will join with them in bring'ing a test case; also, that as Mr Hoeking ha? already tlie mutter in hand on behalf of the council, it would be a great saving in cost to. ratepayers if both local bodiea were to act on the two bodies instructed." The Chief Inspector of Stock wrote forwarding certificate of renewed slaughterhouse licenses for A. Fell, A, Kilpatrick, and H. Carson, of Waikouaiti, and for J. O'Connell, Scacliff.—Received, Mr J. F. C. Campboll, Valuer-general, wrote forwarding form of declaration m connection with tho payment of subsidy — Received. 'Mr F. A. Oullen, Recoiver of Land Revenues, wrote stating that tho sum' of £10 4s 2d being " further" accrued during the period ended February 29, h&d been placed to the council's credit.—Received. Goldfielda revenue for half-year, ended June 30, was shown at £13 ICE.—Received. The Chairman of the Waimate County Council wrote re compensation for land taken as a public road.—Received and approved; member for the district to be asked to lend the matter his support, ,Tho Paymaster-general wrote forwarding vouohcr for £82 5s lOd, being advance on Main North road vote.—Received. Mr Charles Booth wrote requesting the oouncil to form the road to section 27, block 111, North-East Valley Riding.—Received, Inspector to report. An application from Seacliff Sohool for a path was granted. FIN'ANOIAfi. Accounts amounting to £193 9s 8d were passed for payment. The tender of J Sykcs for 40 yards of metal for Mihiwaka road, Blues kin Riding, at 6s 3d per yard, was accepted. GENERAL, It was resolved that tenders be called for 500 yards of metal, more or loss, to repair a read known as the Blueskin and Port Chalmers road. Tenders to be considered at t.he hext meeting. Contract 'to be let in one or more lota. That. Messrs Scott Bros, be notified that it is the intention. of this council to repair this road, and the quantity of metal it is proposed to put on it. That they be asked to send a representative to examine the state of the road before the council starts to repair it.
