Mr Redmond wnrmily praised Mr Birrell for solving' the problem that had foiled Mr Gladstone. Amid Nationalist cheers, Mr Balfour, in ft .few graceful words, supported Mt Bir.l'flll, aridsaiid that the main outlines of the ■bill were such as lie always wished to see passed, It was a great and courageous effort to deal with a crying scandal, hut he feared that- owing to the affiliation of Moynooth with Dublin University the latter might fall unduly under clerical control, Mr Birrell said he hoped the new University would play a great part in educating and unifying a famous race, Tito bill has been read a first time in the House o? Lords.
