AUCKLAND TEACHERS.
«» ASPERSIONS KESENTED. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 3. At the annual meeting of tho Auckland District. Branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute 10-day. Mr Wells took exception to tho lone of the remarks made by the chairman of tho Education Board. (Mr L. J. Bagnall) with regard to teachers and extra school holidays. When a proposal was made to close the schools during fleet, week, Mr Ba K nall said lie did not think the board should assist in increasing the idleness of tho community, and questioned whether they would lie justified in paying £1000 to the teachers of the Auoklaritl district (or doing nothing. "It appeared to me," said Mr Wells, "that in speaking as ho did tho chairman was speaking more from the point of view of tlio factory Jnanager than as chairman of a large and important Education Board." Personally, he knew of -no general request which had' been' made by the' teachers for ail extra week's holiday. Nothing had called for Mr Bagnall's. remarks, and. ho thought they might well .express their regret .that tho chairman of tho Education Board saw fit to sneak in such a. manner of the board's teachers. Ho moved—"That this meeting regrets tlio tone of Mr Bafcnail's remarks at the last meeting of tho .' Education Board, inasmuch as it felt that they cast an ■. undeserved slight on the, 1 ' teachers in the hoard's service." Tlio president (Mr C. Munro) seconded the motion, stating that he had also felt 'that . Mr Bagnall had gone out of hie way to cast a slight on 'the teachers. ' Tho motion ' was carried unanimously. '
