The Federal Statistician estimates tho population of the Commonwealth as st December 1 last at 4,197;037, made up as follows:—New South Wales, 1,568,942; Victoria, 1,248,095; Queensland, 541,765; South Australia, 392,664; Westralia, 361,563; Tasmania, 184,008. Mr Knibbs's estimate of the population oi Australia on December 31, 1906, was 4,119,481, of which 2,173,545 were males and 1,945,936 wore females. The totals for each of the States were:—Now South Wales, 1,525,697 (males 814,139, females 712,558); Victoria, 1,231,940 (males 616,748, females 615,192); Queensland, 535,113 (males 292,609,' females 242,501): South Australia, including Northern Territory, 363,829 (males 203,499, females 180,330); West Australia, 261.746 (males 153,652, females 108,094); Tasmania, 180,156 (males 92,898, females 87,258).
