' We are indebted to an Invorcargill correspondent for the following report:— The • adjourned meeting of the above club' vaa held on Friday orening, 12th inat., Mr J.. Mulvcy (president) presiding, and there w« a very good attendance of members. The report for the year showed that the club had had a fairly successful season. A handicap tourney, in which 20 players competed, bad been played, the winner being Mi H. Eobins. Throe matches were played—two against Gore, resulting with honours even, and one against Wyndham waa won by the Wyndham Club. Financially the club was in a sound position, there being a credit balance of Bs, with assets in the shape of boards and men amounting to about 42. The election of officera for the ensuing wasoil resulted as follows:-President, Mr J. Mulvey (re-elected); vioe-prosidents, Messrs t. Le Petit and R. Policy: com-mittee-Messrs F. Hutohina, A. Blotnfield W. Adcock, S. Horan, and M. O'Byrne' secretary and treasurer, Mr Jno. Patterson '■ captain Mi F. Hntcbins; handicapper, Mr J. Mulvey. The subscription was fixed at ss, the club to meet on Tuesday and Saturday ovenings the first practice night to be Saturday. 20th inst. It was decided to accept a challenge from the Gore Club to play a match on show night (Wednesday, 17th inst.), 15 playors a-sidc. A handicap tournament will be got under way immediately, entries to close on Saturday, 20th, and pliy to commence on the following Tuesday, each player to play two games with every other player. An entrance fee of Is to be charged for tourney, to be devoted towards second and third prizes, the first prize being a set of ivory men and a board presented by the president.

Mr Toshach offered a quantity of literature on the game to the clnb for the uso of members, and was heartily thanked for the same. Mr Tily, a Dunodiii visitor, and a member I ot the committee appointed to revise the rules of the N.Z.D.A., brought forward the proposed alteration in the constitution of tho executive, and asked for an expression of opinion from the local club. The meeting unanimously agreed that the present constitution was most unsatisfactory, and that tho association should bo governed by a central executive, with headquarters in Duncdin, instead of consisting, as at present, of members scattered throughout tho Dominion, who _ could never meet together id' the transaction of business. It "was also agreed that tho central executive should be ! responsive for the raising of the funds (or tho championship tourney, instead of throw-1 ing the responsibility on the local committee of the town in whioh tho tourney was held. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. Mr Buttcrfiold, treasurer, acknowledges the following contributions to the prize fund: — Collected by F. E. Hilliker—P. Hilliker, 10s; Thos. Dickson and Robert Matheson] 5a each; J. Ilalc, R. Dalziol, C. Tily, Jas. Clark, D. M'Donald, J. Anderson, T. Sanders, E. Botting. R. Muir, J. Offen, J. Davis, Jae! Christie, ( Jas. Bryce, J. Lucas.—At the Otago Club on Saturday evening last Mr J. A. Lucas was the recipient of a small token of esteem | from the members of the club to mark the occasion of his recent marriage. Mr H. Ilalliday (president of the club) made the presentation in a congratulatory speech, and on behalf of the members wished him and Mrs Lucas long life and prosperity. Mr It Oaldow followed, speaking in hb happy, humorous vein. The genial "Jack" m:ide a very eßeotive reply. His associations with the game and the club had, he said, boon somewhat dislocated during his training [or I the event he had recently won; but lie believed he hud now settled down, and he intended to give tho game serious attention.— (AppJause.) He thanked the members for their token of goodfellowship and kindly expressions; and he would vaJ.no their gift not only 1 for its value, but more particularly for the feelings which prompted it,— (Applause.) Otago Championship.—Play in this event is moving steadily ahead, competitors meeting twice ft week—Wednesdays and Saturdays —in the Otago Club. Visitors are always weicome'. Mt W. Tibbies.—lt is with regret that we have to announce that Mr W. Tibbies, the Goro Club champion and Beoretaiy for the N.Z.D.A., leaves for Victoria next Monday, 22cd inet., to enter into business in Ararat, where he lias purchased a going concern, and takes possession ou July 1. In impart ing the foregoing information, Mr Tibbies writes:—"l would have liked very much to remain in New Zealand until the next tournament, to have had tho pleasure as well as the work of seeing that through. We are having a nicetiug to-night (15th) to e'.ect a new seoreiary; wc will not have the slightest difficulty in getting someone to take it on, as they are very '-enthusiastic at present about the game. I wish your column, and New Zealand draughts in general, every success." Mr Tibbles's departure will be a distinct loss to Gore in particular, and New Zealand iu general. Possessing youth, ability and enthusiasm for the game, combined with a quiet but attractive personality, Mr Tibbies would doubtless havo been quite a host in himself in engineering the next N.Zi.u.. tourneys. As a 'crossboard player, 100, Mr Tibbies created a decided impression among the championship competitors at Easter time; all of Yihich accentuates our regret at his going. What 13 the Dominion's loss will be Victoria's gain. Wo owe Mr Tibbies thanks for favours in tho past, and wish him evory success in his new'sphere and business. A Pretty Photo.—Mr Leo. It. Morris, of Pahnerston, favoured us last week with a photo, of his two little giris playing a game of draughts. The children call themselves " Gardiner and Butterfield," and the attitude of profound solemnity and deeprthought depicted on. their features is undoubtedly a tribute and a compliment to the gentlemen named. The younger child has a forefinger on a man, and her attitude augurs well for her maintenance of woman's rights in the days to come. Mr T. Tily.-Mr Tily, of Duncdin, is in Ir.vercargill at time of writing, returning probably at the end of next week. He was present at the annual meeting of the Invcrcargill Draughts Olub last Friday, and says it was "an enthusiastic gathering." _ The Draughts World.-'J'ho World for May is to hand with tho customary promptness. It is a-n interesting number, containing an excellent account of tho English Championship Tourney, and a number of other important evonta in the Homeland. The game and problem departments aro not neglected, the names of famous players appearing in connection with both sections of tho name A. Dryson and Co., 93 Trongatc, Glasgow, Scothmd. Ss Gd per annum, post free. A Curious Story.-We have, at'different times came across some strange individuals, and heard many 9tories, amusing and otherwise, in connection with the game of draughts. However, tho accuracy of the following is vouched for (says the Nottin°hamshive Guardian), and in our opinion It beats the whole lot:-Three foremen have been summarily dismissed from one of the largest shipyards on the Eiver Wear far Paying draughts during working hours nlw-t a terrible crime! Perhaps they were getting in trim for the English championship tournament? Nevertheless, we do not hesitate to say that tho punishment is outrageous and players generally will, we think agree with us.
