FATALITIES.

DEATH OF MR GILROY. (Per United Press AssouiiTicy.) CHRISTCHUROH, Juno 18. Mr J. Gilroy, chief engineer of the Union Company's steamer Kaituna, who lwd both feet cut off by be'Dg knocked down, and run over by railway trucks in Lytfclton station yard on Monday afternoon, died in the casualty ward of the Christchurch Hospital on Wednesday. Gilroy never properly regained consciousness. It was scarcely expecved that he would recover from tho effect.; of his terrible injuries, and he gradually v<anfc and died from shock at 4.35 p.m. jeslcrday. Mr Gilroy, who was 54 years oi age, was a native of East Lothian, and had been in New Zealand about 35 years. He Was one of the longest service engineers in the Union Company's employ, having joined its service about 25 yenra ago. Mr Gilroy served in a number of tho company's steamers, and has been chief engineer of the Kanieri, Southern Cross, Maliinapiia, Herald, Coi'ihna, Taieri, and latterly of tho' Kaituna. Ho was a widower, and leaves two grown-up sons. His home was 'in Roslyn, and the body has been taken to Duncdin for burial. An inquest was held this afternoon, when --a verdict of " Accidental death" was roturncd,; no blame being attachable to anybody. A rider was added that the Railway Department should 1 be recommended to station a man on the wharf side of the railway crossing to warn pedestrians and others of tho danger of shunting operations The Coroner said ho agreed with tho rider, and would forward it to the general manager of railways. HAMILTON, June 18. Leslie Ernest Franklin, 16 years of age, hanged himself last night in his grandfather's house. He left a letter stating that hs was tired of life. No other reason is assigned.
