The cla-usq dealing with the candidates for' the head mastership of the Maheno School in the Selection Committee's report, which was left over from the meeting on the previous day, was further considered in committee. On resuming, the resolution arrived at in committee—"That the first selection be upheld"—was put tev-hc meeting. Rev. Mr Fraser .said that in the absence of tho chairman (Mr T. Mackenzie), who had expressed himself with the minority in Uk> committee on the previous occasion, the matter had been reaffirmed by the same majority as before. Ho wished that fact to go forth. Mr Borric said that at the meeting of tho Selection. Committee- Mr Mackenzie did not vote at all. Mr Mackenzie remarked that he could exercise both his deliberative and his casting vote, but did not think it advisable. Mr Mitchell wished to correct Mr Bprrie, Mr Mackenize had .expressed his opinion in favour of the minority, but as it required his casting vote he did not see any necessity to exercise it. Hon. Mr Fergus said the rectson why he voted for the Selection Committee's report in this caso was that tho inspectors were unanimously and most emphatically of the opinion that tho man selected for the first place was tho best man by a long way. The motion was carried by 4 votes to 3. For (4); Messrs Borric, Scott, Israel, Fergus. Against (3): Messrs Mitchell, Snow, Fraser. TECHNICAL SCHOOL. Mr Scott said the powers that ho had brought down new regulations in connection with manual and technical education. They were very drastic, and some of them, he thought, would retard the work of technical education throughout theDominion. The limitation of classes, for instance, worked cut so that a horticultural class in DuneUin, of 35 pupils, would huvo to be split up into too, and the instructor (Mr T.aruiock) probably would not take two classes. The Board of Managers had decided to send a deputation to Wellington to interview, the department, and as Mr Marshall- was director of the school, and also held employment under the Education Board, lto (Mr Scott) had been deputed to request, on behalf of the Board of Managers, that permission ho given to Mr Marshall to leave his duties in the Normal School in order to join the deputation in Wellington, as he was most conversant with tlie details of the classes. Mr Marshall was not in favour of going, seeing that he did not allow his duties under the board to clash with his duties in the Technical School. Rev. Mr Fraser said that Mr Marshall was wisely guided in seeking to preventhis duties at t-lie Technical School from interfering with his duties under the board, which was his first, consideration, Mr Israel moved, and Mr Scott seconded —"That Mr Marshall be given a week's leave of absence, if necessary." The motion was unanimously agreed to. PROMOTION OP TKACHKKS. Mr Mitchell moved—"That; a committee of tiio whole board take into consideration the question of devising a scheme of systematic promotion of teachers." This was purely a preliminary motion. Recent experiencvi had shown that a scheme of this sort was necessary. Ho had liimself prepared a rough draft ot such a scheme which, he thought, would, at anynite, form the of a definite proposal. He was prepared to hand it over to the lxxird,
so that it might bo considered at next w meeting. n llev. Mr Frasor seconded tlio motion, S | which was carried, li SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS. f The following sohool commissioners 1 were appointed: — Ardgowan, Messrs r Douglas and.
