THE BUTTER MARKET.

AUCKLAND VIEWS. (Per United Press Association,) AUCKLAND, April 7. Tlio Wellington quotation for butter has for some time past'been higher than thai ruling in Auckland. The all-round decline of ono penny per pound therefore brings the southern pricc very littlo lower than tho present quotation here. Soma relief, was afforded by tlio general weather conditions which prevailed towards tho end of last month, and tho production all over the North Island received a considerable stimulus. In the opinion of a gentleman identified with the butter trade in. the Auckland provinco, the reduction in Wellington was arranged whilo the full advantage of the increased trade was being'realised. The brief spell of favourable weather and consequent improvement in tho inilk supply also niatlo it appear possible that a reduction might bo effected in Auckland, but tha sudden cold change of the last few days precludes the likelihood of this being realised. Tho output will be still further restricted, and as tho quantity in cold 6torago is-very small for this time of tho year, likely to bo in short supply right through the winter. Another wellknown butter merchant, in referring to the subject, pointed out that, the reduction in Wellington only brings tlio southern price to an equivalent of that now ruling in Auckland. Tho merchant in question anticipates very littlo variation ono way or th„ other in the Auckland quotation. Soir ' alarm, ho points out, was occasioned By the fact) that 16,000 boxes, which were intended for export, had to bo retained in the Dominion, but after the bulk of this has been disposed of tho market will, in his opinion, eettlo down. It is impossible to say what the April output is- going to bo, but tho cold snap in the Auckland and T«ranaki' provinces will have a deteriorating effect. . • ' ' 1
