UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Otago University Council was held yesterday afternoon, when there were present: the Vicechancellor (Mr J. Allen, M.P.) in the chair, Professor Shand, Professor Scott, Dr Hocken, Rev. A. Cameron, Mr John Roberts, C.M.G., Dr Church, Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., Mr D. Stewart, and the Eev. W, Hewitson.

A communication was received from the Professorial Board notifying the appointment of Professor Scott, to the seat on the council vacated by 'Professor Sale. .The Vice-chancellor cordially welcomed Professor Scott-as a member of the council, and, on the motion of Professor Shand, the name of Professor Scott was added to the Special Veterinary Committee.

The Finance Committee Reported having passed-accounts amounting'to £1519 13s 9d. The income since last meeting showed receipts to the amount of £2534 18s. There was ah amount of £1236 14s 9d to the credit of the general account, • against which there were cheques outstanding totalling £670 17s 2d, leaving a net, balance of £sfes 17s 7ci. The overdraft on the Denial School building stood at £429 06 sd.—The report was adopted.

Tho School of Mines Committee recommended that the electric lighting specifications be amended' so as to admit-of all firms to tender, and providing wh'ere necessary for alternative proposals for different kinds of lamps.—Adopted. The House Committee recommended that the Education Board be notified that it was intended to fence in the portion of the University _ ground surrounding the 1 new Hocken wing at the and asking the board to pay half tho cost of fencing,— The Vice-chancellor said that, the matter arose through a communication fßorn Professor Bcnham who had requested that this Jand be resumed.—ln roplv to Dr Church, it was pointed out that tno proposed lino of fencing would not interfere with the 6chool janitor's house.—The , Kev. Mr Cameron expressed doubt as to the time being opportune for carrying out this work. Personally, lie thought it woiild be time enough to do it when the Hocken wing was completed.—Professor Shand thought that tho Education Board should also be requested to remove the janitor's residence from the University land 011 which it was erected.—The Rev, Mr Cameron said they could not. do that. The council had de-

liberately agreed to the building being erccted where it now was.—lt was decided to defer any action in the matter until

the new wing was nearing completion. The Vice-chancellor said that rhe Minister of Education (the Hon. Mr Fowkls) had visited the Dental School that morning, and Dr Pickerilj had submitted a. full estimate of the requirements to bring the school and building quite up to date. The estimate, with, the over-draft on the building and equipment account and some other small things, amounted to £2100. That was all laid before the Minisler, who asked to be supplied with a copy of it, and that copy was now being made. It was a matter for

the council to deal with. Dr Pickerill bad said that it was essential that a small addi-

tion the building should be made for the purposes oE a pathological department. The estimate for that and the equipment was included in the total of £2100.—1t was resolved, on tho motion of Dr Shand, that the matter of providing for a pathological laboratory and equipment, be referred to the Dental Oommitee and Dr Pickerill, and that Professor Scott be added to the committee. It'was resolved that the council record its appreciation of the valuarile fcrvir:> rendered by Professor Sale during the 14-years 111 which ho had been a member of the council, as well as of tho zealom interest which he had always taken in the welfare of the University.

The awarding of scholarships and prizes was confirmed as follows:—Gray Russell scholarship, Henry Whitcoak ' Slater; Richardson scholarship, William Montgomery Stewart.; women's scholarship, Mary Shand Watt; MacG regor prize, William M. Uttley.
