FLOWER SHOW AT RAVENSBOURNE.

■ , — «»_ Ono of the most popular annual fixtures at Raverisbourne is the show of flowers and vegetables, held under the 1 auspices of the Ravensbourae Presbyterian Sunday School. ; A special feature of this function is tho pleasing, fact that the Sunday school children are supplied with seeds during the year, and tho results are manifest in tho exhibition now being held in tlio church schoolroom. Notwithstanding ,the prolonged spell- of dry weather, there was a fine display of cut flowers and vegetables, many,of which would have commanded attention in a metropolitan flower show.. Potatoes and cabbages were represerited by many excellent exhibits, and the 6ame may be said of cucumbers, tomatoes, and vegetable marrows. The show was formally opened by the Rev. Dr Nicolson, who commended the diligence displayed by the children, and congratulated the exhibitors upon the success which had rewarded'their industry. As secretary and general organiser, Mrs T. R099 was indefatigable, and was ably seconded by Mrs B. Tomkinson, whose combined efforts were productive of the most satisfactory results. PRIZE LIST. Best collection of fruit and vegetables. Oven Scones '(open to boys of the church).—Herbert Martin. NEEDLEWORK. There was a splendid collection of general needlework by ladies ■belonging to the congregation, including 'gome choice tray cloths, cushions, dressed dolls, children's clothing, and quite an array of clever novelties in needlework. In the competitive sections Miss Mary Mackie took first for d'oyleys and pinafores,' and MJss Ella Tomkinson [secured first for pincushions. The side shows included a fernery, which proved' one _' of the most attractive ■ items of the exhibition. It was in charge of Mr J. Fernie, who had colleoted a fine assortment of ferns, which were very tastefully arranged and illuminated by eleotrio light fromi tho electrical laboratory in charge of Mr J. Ross and Mr Nesbit, whose electrical apparatus caused a good deal of merriment and interest, both to adults and juveniles. There was also a post office, m charge of Sir E. Tomkinson and Mrs Car] Ball, where post-cards, etc., could bo procured, and staff of messengers' was always at hand to assume prompt delivery. A museum, comprising curiosities of Nature and art, was one of the 'ohief attractions, and embraced some striking exhibits, including a fine specimen" of the hedgehog fish, a platypus, sgakes, • loaf insects, etc., and a fino collection of South Sea Island curious. The shooting gallery was well patronised during the evening, and under tho management of Mr M. Sword, proved a decided attraction. A striking novelty, which came in for a good deal of attention during the evening, was an orange .t-reo laden with fruit, exhibited by Mr Thos. Ross. The West Harbour ' Brass Band, under tho conduotorship of Bandmaster W, Webbor, was. presont, and ' played a. number of choice selections during • the evening.
