PENINSULA SHOW

The thirtieth annual show of the Otago Peninsula A. and P. Society was hold on ilite society's show grounds at l'ortobcllo 011 Saturday. Residents and settlers on the Peninsula always patronise fliis eliow, find tho attendance, combined wilh numerous visitors from Dunedin, l'orl Chalmers, and surrounding districts, was up to the Standard of former years. 'Pho whole arrangements for tho show, cxcept the orainpod accommodation providod for the soerctary and press representatives, wero excellent. Tli» president, secretary, and otlur officials, and particularly tiio class stewards, worked energetically all day, and toy llicir nfforts in the judging rings made the work of tlie judges easy and pleasant. Tho weather, although at times undecided and threatening. held up well all day, and visitors found amplo to engage thdir attcn--4 ion in viewing and discussing- the merits of exhibits, listening to tbo excellent music of the Port Chalmera Brass Band, and watching sideshow's . provided by private individuals who had wares for falo and wonderful information to impart in regard to the excelloneo of what, tlioy wished to dispose of. ,

Tho society adherer to its excellent systorn of judging in rings, a system which could with considerable advantago be adopted by other sooictics. Hie rings, four in number, are roped-in enclosures, into which each of tlie classes of flloolt—horses, cattle, etc.—are brought for judging, and the public are apprized of flu; fact, that u' particular claw is to bo judged by one of •the stewards calling out the, fact anil ringing .1 boll. Tho publio have thus an opportunity of looking on while the awards of the judged are being made, and as jud'giu; • is jjoinjr on in four rings at tho ae time tho judging is got over in good time. As is usual at the Peninsula Show, which is representative of a dairying district, cattle constituted a largo proportion of Saturday's exhibits, Aldorncys, .Jerseys, and Ayrshirus being in strong evidence. Small-framed cattle of good milking strains are t>peeially suitable for tho Peninsula, and special attention has consequently 'been given to Ayrshire a.nd Jenyy stock, which under careful breeding and judicious crossing are a Jeaturo of dairying in this part of Olagu. In the Alderneys or Jersey class Mr F. Ilellycr, with good exhibits from bis well-known herd, carried off the bulk of the awards. Fivo or six very good well-bred cows wore shown in this class, but a number of the otlior animals woro not in the usual good (•how condition. The champion bull and cow were splendid animals, -and a dry cow tiliown by Mr W. Geary was only a little behind tho champion. A two-year-old heifer shorn by Mr Hellyer gives promise, when shown /i milk, of . being an animal hard to beat. Tho half-breds wero a fair lot, but sevorai of tho exhibits wero not jn condition. Mr J. S. Shaw, who secured most honours, showed a number of excellent little cattle. Ayrehirca throughout woro a good class, and there was close competition between Mr A. M'Calio and Hall Bros., and eomo good animals were shown by Messrs D. Hughes and .T. Dick, tho former securing tho championship for, his bull, ami Mr M'Gibe being awarded acbanrpion certificate for a splendid cow. Mr Geary and 'Hall Bros. were tho principal prize-takers in, half--bred Ayrehires, some of tho animals shown being excellent exhibit,? of a hardy and proItablo cross, the yearling heifer shown by ill- Clearwater being a very promising ■youngster. Shorthorns, on tho whole, were not a strong cliiss numerically nor in quality, most of tho exhibits being out of condition. In this class Mr ,T. Bacon secured first for an aged bull, and Mr .T. S. Shaw exhibited eomo promising heifers in the purebreds and a coimlo of good half-bred cows. Draught horses woro a good serviceable lot, tho Clydesdale stallion' "Young l'rinco Albert" securing first and champion. Tho brood mares and three-year-old fillies, and also the two-year-old fillies, wero up to the standard of formor shows, while tbo yearling filly exliibitod by Mr \V. which carried off first and champion, gavo every indication of developing into a high-class mare. linens wre numerous, and varied considerably. The judges in this class lud some hesitation in coming to a decision as to first and second awards for a roadstor stallion, ultimately giving their verdict in favour of Mr AY. C. IJodgkinson's exhibit. Tho brcod mares, particularly tho mare shown by Messrs Jlrown and Neill, woro good exhibits, and the fillies and colts were a promising lot. fieldiiigs and weight-carrying hacks -were also good as a whole, anil buggy horses and ladies' hacks were good rings. Sheep wero conspicuous by their absence, only one pen of five fat Border ; Leiccstor lambs being shown. Dogs, pigs, and poultry wore not largo classes, and dairy produce exhibits, owing to tho absonco of a well-known butter exhibitor, we.vo not, so prominent- as in former years. Mrs Lewie secured moot points in l)uttor, and Mrs M'Cartnoy -was equally successful in homo-baking exhibits, and tho oxhibits of locally-grown potatoes and exhibits of roll bacon and ham woro excellent.
