DESERTING FROM WARSHIPS
(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. December 12. When (lie ferry steamer Albatross was 6OIIIP distance, up tlio harbour about 9 o'clock la'st sijht ;i cry was heard from tlio water. A search resulted in the discovery of n man named Simpson, a stjker on H.M.S. Pegasus, floating, with tlio assistance of a piece of wood about 2ft long. Simpson, who was much exhausted, stated that he fell overboard' from the warship, and hud been in the water over an hqur. Thoujli a strong swimmer, ho was unable to make headway against the title. It would anpear that Simpson and another man were prisoners on the Pegasus, which was them until the arrival of the Challenger, froni which the? had deserted. The other man is supposed to have escaped ashore in the Eataiioa while she was engaged coaling the warahin. and the opinion held concerning Simiv"'* inuiior(•ion k that he was waking an effort to obtain the name result by swimming, and was nearly drowned in the attempt.
