KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS.
, The first anniversary of the Knights of ' Pythias, N.Z., .No. 1, was celebrated -'I by a smoko concert in the club house last night, when tho Chancellor Commander (Bro. (J. \V. C. M 4 .Douuld) occupied tho chair. As ;j explained by tho chairman in proposing tho .'•) toast of tho Supremo Lodge, the Ordor of j the luiights of Pythias wag an American in- « stitution, founded after tho civil war, by / Mr Justice H. liathbonc, with tho object of r j again cementing together the families and i parties who had been at enmity. It now t numbered about a million members, and has I lodges wherever the Stars and Stripes hold sway, and also in Canada. The lodge in Dun- ; edin was the first in the Southern- Hernis- \ pherc, but in New Zealand, at any rate, there / was a future for it. The evening was very harmoniously spent, tho other toaatayj 'honoured beiig "Lodgo N'.Z.. No. 1," pro- j posect by Bro. F. (r. Cray and respondod to '! by liro. It. Grace, who lias been keeper of - records and master of finance, btrfc has had A t;> ri'iinquish tho position owing to pressure."/ of business was, during the evening, mado.'! the recipient of a purse of sovereign* as \ a recognition of liis past services. Fitting I reference was also mado to tho work done ( bv Bro. G. IT. Watts at the inception of the J lodge. The evening's entertainment was j' contributed to by Messrs J.
