BASKET BALL.

The first basket ball tournament to be held in the colony eventuated at Bishopscouit on Saturday, when the following teams competed for -the championship:— North-East Valley, St. Andrew's, Kaikorai, Ca.versb.ani, and Roslyn. The proceeds were m aid of a club-room for the Kaikorai Presbyterian Young Men's Bible Class, and wo understand tho fmid was verv considerably augmented. The Xbtfli-East V&llcy Club carried off tho championship after a great struggle in the final with the nowly-fonned St. Andrew's organisation. In the game of basket ball, tho object is to throw the ball info a wastepaper basket suspended some 10ft above the ground. The roles are much the same as those which govern the game of Association football, with the exception that each player has only a certain plot of ground' to work, and must not retain the ball for more than thieo second. A referee controls the same, Taken all round, basket ball seems to be an excellent sport for young ladies, combining as it does the excitement of football with the athletic pleasures of all outdoor sport.
