It maintains the status quo of the respective territories, with the principle of equal opportunity. 11. recognises the independence and territorial integrity •of China, ami equal opportunity as regards commerce and industry for all nations in China. Both countries are pledged to uphold the maintenance of the status quo in China and of the principle of equality with all peaceable means at their disposal. Tho treaty, which was signed at the end of July, has a. currency of five years.
