SACRED CANTATA.

Tho sacred cantata ' Esther" was gKen in the Roslyn Presbyterian Church last evening by the choir. The attendance was large, and filled the church, many of iihose present being members of the, choiis of city and suburban Presbyterian churches. The music ol this fine composition was excellently interpreted, the choruses being well balanced, and the solos, dueta, recitatives, and airs were all placed in capable .hands. Tho choir was assisted in its efforts , by a number of well-known vocalists, Mr S Angell (bass) contributing the solo " Nazareth," Mis 3 E Bentham (soprsao) " Beyond," Mr F. Salter (tenor) "Saved by n fluid,' Miss ll'Lionald (contralto) " Shepherd, of love," and Mr F. Murphy (baritone) " Queen of aagels." Ttooughout the wholo of the recital the sopranos and alt-03 wore prompt in picking up and following the bents of the conductor's baton. The tenors (although few in number) als , ) deserve commendation for their rendition of the part-singing that fell to them, and the basses (a strong combination) sang vritb good effect. The cantata, as rendered last evening, is the most ambitions work hitherto put forward by the choir, and the organist and choirmaster (Mr G. Z. Lindley), as well as the members, ate to be complimented on the sueees9 achieved. The object of the entertainment was to raise funds towirds ihe purchase of a pipe organ, and, judging by tho attendance, this fund should receive a substantial addition. The Rev. J.
