OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The regular monthly meeting of theOtago Education Board was hold yesterday, and was attended by tile Hon. T. Fergus fin the chair), Messrs D. Borrie, A. M'KciTOw, W. Scott, G. C. Israel, W. Snow, and the Rev. P. B. Fraser. MILITORN SCHOOL. A deputation from the Millrarn. School Committee, consisting of Messrs 11. Henderson and T. H. Russell, waited upon the board with regard to the new site for the Milburn School—Mr Henderson said there seerred to hi a good deal o[ misunderstanding about the matter, and it was' thought it would bo wise for Mr Rnesell and himself to como to town to explain the position. Mr Henderson then went into detail as to the distances individual childron would have to walk to the proposed site—that was trie site recommended l>y the Milburn School Committee. The site proposed was central for the children resident in the district.—The Acting Chairman said the board would look into the iiwtter and lot the deputation know the result of its deliberations.

CLAIMS l'Oll HALF-COST. The following tlaiuia for half-cost of repairs to buildings were granted:— Eavensbounie, £23;' Tapanui, £3 10s; Bough Ridge. £2; and Hampden, £3. The teacher a I Woston asked to bo recompensed for improvements to the grounds about the school.—lt was resolved that a reply be sent that the board had no funds fov this purpose, and that the teacher be referred to thu next tenant, who should be prepared to give reasonable compensation for the improvements effected.

With regard to the extension of the Maori Hill School ground, the Education Department wrote declining to pay more than half-cost.—lt was resolved to purchase the section tho board lnd in view.

Aii application was made to tho board to establish a school at tho railway works, Big Hill, between Lawrence and Beauwunt.—Some correspondence was read from the l'ublie Works Department on the nijitter, and it was resolved by the board that if thai department supplied the building the board would provide a teacher.

Recommendations from the Educational Institute as to holding the annual examinations as closely m possible before the Christmas holidays, and as to teachers who n-uro obliged to Hike Standards V and \1 together for raiding being allowed to take Standard V Reader of another series in lien of Standard YI Imperial Reader, were referred to the inspectors for report.

The Pukepiro Committee having applied for an additional room to the teacher's residence, the board decided to' ask the architect to report.

The question of the removal of the echool at Rac's Junction was deferred to next meeting.

A household rehool was granted for Timarii Station, head of Lake Hawea.

Tho Wairunn School Committee renewed its application (or the removal of the teacher's residence, and it was resolved that the committee be requested to say what site was available; architect to report as to cost of removal of residence to site.
