MINING.

The. manager of the Mount Lyell Mining Company reports under date June 19 that 1651 tons of copper have been consigned for tho current, half-year. The master of the Blackwater River dredge wired yesterday:—" No roturu. Ground under terrace barren. Turned dredge round." Tho secretary of tho Vinegar Hill Sluicing Company reports that tho company washed up its boxes after five weeks' run for a return of 2302 12dwt gold, this being only the cleaning up of tho paddock before taking out tho wash.

Tho master of the Alolyneux Kohinoor dredge reports under date June 29:—"During tho week the ground worked on the cast side of the cut. has been very tight and hard to bottom, but tho prospects have improved slightly. t On tbe west side the gold seems to havo out out, so wo are leaving it and working on the _ east side. The prospects are not good, and if there is no improvement by the end of the week I think it will bo advisable to shift tho dredge up tho river. The new sections for the screen will most likoly be on the claim by the end of the week, and they will bo put in position as soon as possible."

_The dredgemasler's report for the Sandy Point machine for tjbo week ending June 29 is as follows;—" Dredged 119 hours during tho week. We had trouble with the main elevator links breaking. During the first part of the week the frosts were very hard. Tho ground and the prospects continue to keep about tho samo as in the previous week, bo far showing no improvement." Tho master expected to get the dredge swung during tho present week. The .weather oil Friday and Saturday was mild. Tbe t master of the Elcctric No. 1 dredge, reporting on the Ist inst., nays:—"As the river is low the dredgeNs obliged to work through the Junction Electric dredge's tailings in order to reach the maiden ground. It is expected she will be up* to the face some time next week." The maiden ground referred to is near tho coal chair.—The No. 2 machine worked 118 hours during tho wist week, dredging Sift ahead on a cut afcout 116 ft wide, with <i greatest depth 36ft. The sample of gold obtained was coarser, nearly two-thirds of the return being coarse. The dredge was atiil getting a certain amount of worked ground on the Bnnnockburn side, but it was expected that returns would improve when she reached solid ground across the face. During the week one of the winch clutolies broke, causing a stoppago of eight hours.

The urns-tor of the Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge reports that the machine worked Bft ahead on a cut 250 ft wide and from -12ft to 48ft deep: the shallower ,ground being on the east side, where there is still a hard bar, which will probably last a week or two. The breakage, of a screen roller caused dredging to be suspended for two days. No. 2 dredge .worked 4ft -ahead, and got a fair prospect across the whole of the cut, which was 400 ft wide and from 33ft to 40ft deep.. The wash was very tight, end carried !arge'bouldors. The working hours were leas than usual owing to the first mdrtion pinion getting partially stripped.

On Mount Livingstone (Tasmania) a shaft has been sunk about 00ft on porphyry banded with quartz, currying small quantities of galena, blonde, and arsonopyrite, but samples token from the heap and selected from the. most likely-looking stone yielded only a luinute trace of gold. None of {lie reef "matter in these occurrences round Port Cygnet has ever been found to contain gold in payable quantities. The quartz appears to be a contact .development, and swells and disappears alternately. The breccia-ted line of country along the contact lias undoubtedly shed the gold which has been won from the alluvium. Ihe latter has been derived from the slow waste of the hills, and as it-does not cam' gold in largo quantities, it may be assumed that the reefs or formations exposed are not rich. The occurrences of gold may be looked upon as irregular, and likely to he payable only when some unusually rich shoot is struck. The chances of finding these pay-shoots may bo regarded as a matter of prospectors' luck. Tile most that a geological examination of the ground can do is to point out the lines along which search may he most usefully made, • ■ DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE.
