Advice has been received by cable that Wi'.liiun J. Porteoii3 has passed tho finaj examination for the degrees of M.B. and Ch.B. ut -Iho Edinburgh University. Mr P. L. Brown, clerk at Burkes railway station, has been transferred to a similar position at Balclutha. Mr E. W. Carter, clerk at Oanrani station, fills tho vacancy. Mr J. \V. Blacke, accountant in the Bank of Australasia, Invercargill, has receive;! advico of his promotion to the position of majioger of tho Gore branch in Buooeesioa to Mr Montgomery, who has been transferred to Feilding.
Our Waitahuna correspondent sta-tes that a very old resident of the*'district in the person of Mr .Georgo Bartlelt .passed away on Thursday. Mr Bartlett went out to his work in the morning as usual, but returned to tho house, complaining of feeling cold, aad passed away without a struggle, At the monthly meeting of the Hanover Street Baptist Church on Thursday, 27th inst., Miss J. Aitken was appointed church organist and Mr S. J. Gilbert conductor of the choir.
The Bruce Herald states that Miss Jessie Begs Roid, of Terauka High School, has been recommended by tho Tokomairiro High School Committee for appointment as secondary assistant at the school, vice Miss Dare, who leaves for Balclutha District High School. Miss Reid has been in tho Marlborough and Canterbury districts teaching, but was trained in Duiicdin.
A Press Association wire from Timaru advises that at a meeting of the Harbour Boanl yesterday Mr R. H. Douglas (dredgemastor under the Olngo Harbour Board) was selected from 34 applicants, for the position of dredgemaster of the Timaru .board's new dredge. For Uie position of ladderman on the samo boat there were also 34 applicants, and Mr E. Morrison (now at the Bluff) wao appointed.
