Perhaps the highest prioe for a sermon goe« every year to a German preachor, who receives £920 for his effort. This high figure ig obtainod in a curious way. As long ago as 1690 a wealthy French bavon named Favart, who lived in Elberfold, diet! and bequeathed his money to tho Protestant church there, on the condition that it should bo invested and the interest given annually to some clergyman, chosen haphazard from those holding the poorest livings in tho see, on condition that he preached a short sermon extolling tho good deeds of the dead baron. The sermon is generally delivered after the regular morning service on the first Sunday in June, and lasta half an hour.
