Sir Edward Grey made the announcement of Lord Cromer's resignation of his position as British Minister in Egvpt in t 10 House of Commons on April 11, and tlio House, crowded to hear th- official presentation of -the .news, was [irofoundlv moved Lord Cromer's own words, as recited by the Foreign Secretary, were as follow.-' 1 ! have arrived at the conclusion that, 1 must ask you to accept my resignation. I have done so after very full ionfiuleration and ronsiilfaiion with my medical adyiFer and Kir Stephen Mackenzie, who m fioio. I feel also that I do not possess tho health and t slre.nglh which are to do justice to all the very iiii|>ort;tnt interests involved. Both doctors are quite Agreed that it is necessary that I should give up mv work." With emotion Sir Edward Grey oxpressed the great, regret that; the Government felt, whilo to himself it meant more than he could express. lie was glad tliero was a prospect of Lord Cromer recovering his health. "It is the object of the Government," ho declared,' "to maintain his work and to rontinue the policy inspired by him, of which a roost, admirable exposition was contained in his last, report. His retirement from Egypt is the personal lass which the public service of this country could suffer." Mr Um(four followed with an . eloquent little tribute. "It js," ho said, "only history which can give an adequate estimate of the work which Lord Cromer lia.s done in Egypt. We feel hew marvellous aro tho moral ami material labours ho has gone through."
