The mails which were despatched from Wellington for tlio Continent, of Europe and Iho United Kingdom, via. Naples, on May 3, arrived in London on the afternoon of the 9th inst.
The Drainage Board has now completed tlio oovnriug in of the Now street ditch, us per arrangement with tlin St. Kilda Council. The covering in ot the Driver street portion of the- ditch will to started to-day. The formation of a footway over the rovered-in ditches will bo put in hand by tlio local council very shortly.
Tho following applications wore received nt last night's meeting of the Mornington Borough Council for the appointment of waterworks engineer:— J, and IS. Scott. K. Roberts, K. S. Allan, P. .1. Williams, \V. .7. Hall, L. 0. Beal. and h. IX MiicGeorgo. The applications wre referred to tho Water Committee to report to a special meeting of the covneil to ho held on Thursday week, councillors io have access to the testimonials in the meantime. Seven lenders were received (or tho supply of wire cable, and theso were referred io the Tramways Committee to report to the same meeting. The city thoroughfares were yesterday in a deplorably mnddy and treacherous condition. Iγ. fact some of tho roads, more especially in Lower High street, were almost impassable. A few cyclists had minor spills in the city during the day, hut fortunately nothing of a serious nature happened. Tho traffic on the Jforniugton Corporation tramways for last ,111011 th showed a slight increase as compared with the same month last year, Tho. main line returned £579 11s 2d, as compared with £55? 9s 8d for last year, while the Mary-hill line produced £33 4s lOd, as against £33 12s lid last year. The Elgin road returns are. the lowest sinco tho line was opened for traffic at tho beginning of the year, being £35 18s Ed.
The secretary stated at last night's meeting of the Drainage Board that out of 3000 city houses connected with iho board's drainage system, certificates to show that the work had l>i>cn carried out- in conformity with the bdard's requirements had been granted in only 81 rases. Mr Marlow said ho had no doulit. that about, tlirecfourtlis of the total miniber of works had been passed by Ilm board's' inspectors, although Ilia ccri.ificatos liad not been applied for.
It. w understood that tlio city engineer ha?, in acordanee with .1 resolution by tho council, prepared specifications for the erection of a six-cell vofuso destructor and flag-making plant, and that, the same, were presented to a meeting o£ tho (iencral Committen yesterday. By a reference, to bis first report, it will lie observed that tlio probable cost of a rofuse destructor, without the flag-making plant, is estimated at about £1500. This is not tho first time that tho question has been under the noticeof tho Duncdin City Council, and certainly it ifl now in the most practical shape it has ever reached, and is an earnest of the council's intention to promote public, health conditions. ■

The Into Dr Alexander, under his will, boi|iip.iilicd the sum of £1250 to th( (loveriior of St. Helena for (lie benefit ol the native-born poor and necessitous inhabitants of tho island. The legacy was given by the deceased gentleman in recognition of the fact that St. Helena was his birthplace, ami that lu's family had been closely connected with it for a lengthy period. An appeal by the Otajo Agricultural and Pastoral Society for fimuioial support in ordor to oxpiiml its field of operations would seem to deserve tho best consideration of the people, of Dunedin and throughout the province. Tho summer and winter shows are undoubtedly of great benefit to both town and country, and have a stimuhvtin<f effect on tho various industries. Tho shows arc tho means of attracting a very large number of people to Dunedin, thereby benefiting merchants, hotollieepers, and the trade of tho city generally. Efforts will also bo made to increase tho membership, which nt its presont strength of 659 is not .nearly so largo as that of some other centres.
A special prizo of £5 is to bo given to Iho district gaining most points at the winter show, and this prizo is to bo awarded to tho local Agricultural Society of the district that gains it. An examination of candidates for certificates as mklwivos was hold at tho Dunodin Hospital yesterday.
