VOLUNTEERING IN OTAGO.
Silt,—ln your issue of the 26th insl. you give the parade state at tho Battalion parade held on Thursday evening. To old
volunteers the figures given by you must lie interesting, and make one wonder what Volunteering is coming lo in Olago and other parts of the colony. When Colonel Robin was appointed to the command of tho Otago district a new era was to commence, which, unfortunately, is proving a downward one. Excluding tile Garrison Band, which is not part of the activq forcce, the total number on parade was 213. If one cares to go into details the figures are' almost amusing. The ofilcer.? on parade numbered 75, privates 130. buglers 8. .lust fancy 75 officers to 130 men! Some of the companies .were without captains, and several had as many officers as men on parade. What- is fife new Council of Defence doing to improve matters, and what is the cause of euch a state of affairs?—l am, etc., April 27. _ Old Volunteer.
