Interviewed on tho train journey to Tiniiiru, the Acting Prime Minister, referring to (he returns for the financial year, which were only .completed last night' just as. ho was leaving Wellington, and which will bo disclosed in detail at his speech to-morrow evening, paid: "They arc most sai iifnctnry from every i-oiiit o[ view. The surplus will exceed anticipations." In regard to the Exhibition itself, he said that realisation on the building was proceeding. He was very hopeful, from Iho returns so fur to hand, that tho ultimate result would be satisfactory. In. regard to the mail services, Mr HallJones said: " I believe a good service could be arranged with Vancouver. Probably more than one firm or company would* be prepared to compete for such a service." TIMARU, May 2. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones opened the new band room for tho Battalion Band this afternoon. It i s a substantial building, with concrete walls. A'olnntecr officers and a large number of people were present. Mr Hall-Jones will address his constituents to-morrow evening. (From Odr Own* Coi!*iespo*n*d**nt.) TIMARU, May 2. In conversation with a Christchtirch Press representative to-day tho. Acting Prime Minister referred to his policy speech to-morrow night. He said he would deal at length with the finances of tho past year, which will 3 how n surplus (after making provision for a. substantial contribution to (he Public Works Fund and other charges) of over half a million. The Land Bill will also be touched on, and a reply made to tho speech delivered by the Leader of the Opposition at New Plymouth. A general reference will be made to the progress of the larger public works in hand. Mr Hall-Jones does not intend to indicate the introduction of any legislation beyond that already announced which will bo (with the Land Bill and the tariff) a pretty big bill of fare to start with,
