THE NEW ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL.
IteMiitly the Cathedral Beard decided that. this \ms an opportune time for milking <i kuiyb&s on u plan sketched by. the iluv. \Y. Ouizon-Sigeerj willi a. view tn moralising the new cathedral building .fund to at least £10,000, fa as to enable a beginning to bo made anil to claim tho £1000 offered by tho S.P.C.K. It ia thought that with £11, COO in hand it will be possible to commenco at tho cha-ncel anil to build in stages. It is not for a moment to bo supposed that the board would with £ll,oou commence to build a eatheciral exactly jiko tho design at present on view. Such would bo impossible, seeing that two competent architects have pointed out that the design is too ambitious for tho money likely to bo raised, and would cost about SIGO.CCO. The board, wc understand, has in view a. modification of the design of the beautiful plan now being exhibited, which would give a cathedral sceoml to l.ono amongst tho Anglican cathedrals now erected in Australasia, and would bo within tho giving power of the community. At anyratc,' this week the canvass has begun for this praiseworthy object, and every citizen having at heart, the beautifying of tho city must wish that the effort, wiil lw successful. The prcfienfc position of the fund is that there is in hand ir. cash or assured promises some £7000, excluding the , conditional promise of the S.P.C.K., which it is hoped may soon be won. Careful preparations have been made, and au organisation started, with tho Rev. W. Curzon-Siggers as president. The organisation is the New Cathedral Board Associates. Its chief mark is that it licit no "dead heads," but only workers who aie willing to carry out its presidents' plans. The associates enrolled arc u body of workers intbed who may be trusted to do what is expected of tiiein. AYo learn that they have started under, happy aiispiccs, and have set about their la-bour of love and duty with a goodwill. Whatever results may ace-rue, tho indebtedness of the Anglican Church will be great to these ladies and gentlemen—the associates —now working hard for an object for which wo bespeak the sympathetic interest and support of the community. Tho roll oonsisfe of the Row W. Curzon-SigpGrs (president), Messrs C. Arlidge, AY. Burnett, Captain Easlher, Aufrero Femvick, B. B.' Hooper, 11. Marnier, C. 11. Statha-m, W. J. Steele, -T. Sinclair Thomson, 11. West. Mesdames Burnett, Bolam. Beaumont, Clarke, Aufrero Femvick. J. M. Gourley, Hewlett, Gibbs, B. C. Haggitl. Harper, Jamieson, Lonz, TjcCrcn, F. Z. Moore, H. P. Thomp. son, Tniboys, AY. H. Taylor, E. Withers, .Tolm Watson, Misses BcisseJ, Bent-ham. ]?. Bra-yni, V. Campbell, Grindley, J, Fish, Govcn, l'\lyHi Hertslot, Howlison, Hopcraft, Foil, Lo Brim, IC. Battray, I. Ratrray, Talhovs, Tapper. Tho "associates began their task yesterday. It is not- to be expected that any great results will to known for a day or so, as in tho preliminary calls many naturally desire to think over what they will give. After to-day tho associates should meet with donors who, having boon .forewarned, should lx! ready to say what they will promise, We gather that the- associates are not expected to collect tho money. It is their duty to obtain promises of money, preferably promises extending over three or more years. Last night we were informed that tho associates whom the . president has been able to reach by telephone state that every sympathy and good intention to help havo I boon expressed by those who -have been ciillcd upon, and promises of support hare been generously given.
