Ilia Excellency tlio Governor, accompanied by his private secretary (Mr H. C. Waterfield) leit Duncdin for Wellington 011 Saturday. morning. Admiral tfawkes visited Greyniouth 011 Friday, and drove to Port Elizabeth to ess the proposed harbour. On Saturday morning liis Excellency started for Rcefton.
Messrs 3. Matheson, T. Henderson, R Inge-, David Robertson, James Robertson, and \V. Stewart have been elected, without opposition, to the Tomahawk Road Board. Messrs Rob!. Brunton and D. M'Curdy have bjen elected, without opposition, to tlie Peninsula Read Board (Anderson's Bay subdivision).
A private telegram from Cromwell announces Hie death of Mrs Isabella. M'Luy, vrifo of the well-known manager of tho Hartley and Reilly claim and dredge. Mrs M'Lay wus tho eldest daughter, of the lalo Mr John Falconer, who arrived in Otago with his wife and family in 181S or 18-19, a.lll whose first residence in Dimeilin was situate near (ho pond in the reserve now known as tlio Queen's Jubilee Park. Mis M'Lay was one of tlio pupils at the firsi public sehf,ol in Dimedin, of which the first teacher was tha lato Mr James Blackie. The deceased lady, was very highly respected, and ■her losa will be sincerely regretted by a numerous circles of friends, early settlers.
X pleasing ceremony was held at the warehouse of Messrs Smiili and Smith (Ltd.) on Friday evening, when ■Sir William Gray, who is tawing tho firm's employ after 18 years' 6ervice, to enter business on his own account, wr.3 presented with a travelling bag and barometer by his fellow employees. Mr Ijindsay made tho presentation 011 behalf of tile employers, and Mr Gray suitably replied. A pleasant function took place ai the National Mortgage and Agency Company's office 011 Friday, when Air Thomas Turn hull was presented with a travelling bag and cass of pipes by the staff 011 tlio occasion of his transfer to Timaru as assistant auctioneer at the company's branch there. Mr G. R. Ritohie, ill malting tho presentation, spoke of the esteem in which Mr Turnbull had always been held bv the other members of the staff, and said that til® company, although sorry to lose him, were glad to know that bis services wore recognised in the way of promotion. On behalf of the company ho also presented him with a suitable parting gift.
