SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
The quarterly returns of attendance for tin period aided 31st March, 1907, which have been compiled by the secretary of tho Otago Educatisn Board, show that there were 223 schools in operation in this district employing 211 male and 312 female tcschors. The immbar of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 17,829, and at tho end of tho quarter 19,213, -comprising ISS) 9323 girls, The average attendance was' 5725 boys and 8143 girls, .making a total of 16,874, being 317 more than tho total for the previous quarter, and 401 less Ulan for the March quarter, 1908. , The number of pupils admitted during the quarter was 11S4 boys and 1171 girls;—total, 2355. Tho averages for the city and suburban schools for the quarter were:—Albany Street, GO2; Forburv, 580; Caversha-m, 635, ICaihorai, 534; High Street 514; George Street, •191; Union Street, -183; North-East Valley, 158; Arthur Street. 454; Mornington, 402; ifneandrew Road. 393; Norma], 342; Kensington, 212; Musselburgh, 203; 'Alaori Hili.'2o<l; Itavensbourne, 1G8; Anderson's Bay, 122; St. Clah, 98; Wakari, 92; Leith Valley, 45. The averages at Oamarit were: —:N'orth School, 3CG; South, 253; Itiddlc, 235. At tho District High Schools:—Port Chalmers, 394; Balclutha, 315; Tokomairiro, 252; Lawrence, 240; llosgiel, 240; Palmer,ston, 219; Tapunui IC3; Nasebv. 135; Hampden, 83.
During the quarter a new school was opened at Awamangu (Hillend Settlement).
