A SHOCKING ACCIDENT
WOMAN KILLED AT LYTTELTON. RUN , OVER BY A RAILWAY CARRIAGE. (Pμ Uhited Pbiss Assocutiob,) LYTTKLTON, April li About. 8 o'clock on Saturday night an olderjy lady, Mrs Amelia Bisphiun, wife of Mr George. Bispham, of Nelson, was rim over and killed alongside the railway .platform at Lyttelton. Mrs Bispham, who was elaying with her brother, Mr Byron, bootmaker, of Lyttelton, left Christchurch at 7.35 p.m. by tho special-through-steamcr train, with passengers for tho Mararoa. On reaching Lyttelton the train slowed 'down considerably, and Mrs Eispham evidently attempted to alight at tho eastern ojid of the platform, but fell under the .carriage and was killed instantly. Tho body was shockingly mangled, the chest being crushed in and the left leg completely severed by the wheels. An inquest was held this afternoon, when the jury returned n verdict of "Accidental death," there being no evidence to showhow tho woman got. under the train. A gentleman passenger who happened to be sliindiug upon'the same earriago platform as Mrs, B'iepham, who was killed at T/yttclton .oir Saturday night, states that they wore about the middle of a very long I mill, which did not pull-up at tlic station, but passed on to the farther end. The woman waa seen to fall • whilst endeavouring to alight, and a, passenger caught hold of her, but wns unable to keep her up, and narrowly missed getting under tbo train in iho attempt. Fortunately, lie managed to roil I-over oil to tho platform, and thus saved himself. The' unfortunate lady fell between , tho'platform and tho carriages, and the passengers in tho nearest car were., horrified to hour an agonised shriek, and at tho saino instant, fell the car lift twieo as each of tho ..front bogie wheels paasctl over the mi for-, lunate victim. The. woman apparently frarofl that the train was .not going to stop at tho .station, nlnl risked her life rathor than iniss' the'steamer for Notecn, whither she was bound. ■ ■ :. ■
