Tim Earl of Cromer, Consul-general and Minister Plenipotentiary to Egypt, has resigned, on the ground of ill-health. Sir Edward Grey (Foreign Secretary) says that the present policy in Egypt will bu continued. Sir Eldon Gorst, Assistant Undcr-secre-tary of State for Forcigu Aifuirs, succeeds Lord Cromer. LONDON, April 12. (Received April 12, at-11.21 p.m.) Tho newspapers unanimously express gratitude and admiration for Lord Cromer's ssrvices and sincere regret at his retirement. (Received April 13, at 0.15 p.m.) Lord Cromer's resignation, and especially his failing health, j,s keenly regretted on every side. ' Sir Eldon Gorst's appointment was recommended by Lord Cromer, and meets with the fullest approbation in British circles in Egypt. Tim Earl of Cromer is 05 years of ago. Skilled as a diplomatist and administrator, he has been called "tho maker of modern Egypt." He has been associated with Egyptian affairs for the last quarter of a century, and was _dcscril)ed by Lord Kitchener after tho conquest of the Soudan as "the master of us all'." Lord Lansdowne says thai under his guidance Egypt " has advanced by rapid strides along the path of financial and material prosperity." He was married, in 1901 to Lady Katherino Thymic, and was appointed a member of tho Order of Merit in 1906, ■ Sir Eldon Gorst, K.C.8., is a son of Sir .folni Gorst, and was born in New Zealand on .Tune 25, IF6I. He was appointed Assistant Undcr-seerctary of the Foreign Office in 1904. He lias liiyl a distinguished career in Egypt, and was financial adviser to the Egyptian Government from 1998 to 1 1901.
